I'm the worst puppy mom ever
This just isn't our week. First hooligans let Lacy out of the yard, then Tuesday I fell down our stairs and got severe bruises to my leg, then today while I was out Lacy somehow opened her LOCKED kennel door and ate about 6 of my 500mg Naproxen. She's now at the emergancy vet. She's had her stomach pumped and has been given the activated charcoal to absorb any remaining toxins. So far her bloodwork is normal in her kidneys and liver but poison control says that it might not have been long enough for irregularities to show up. I'm going to call back in the morning and see how she's doing then I'm going to go up and visit her. They're thinking she'll probably have to be hospitalized for 3 days.
I feel horrible. I'm a terrible mommy for leaving my medication out where her curious puppy jaws could find it. I even thought to myself this morning I should put these pills back in the bathroom but then I got distracted and didn't even think to go back and get them off of my nightstand.
When will this week be over. Of course ALL of this has to happen while my husband is deployed on the other side of the planet and he can't do anything to help me or soothe my nerves.

Laura, it could've happened to anyone. Hopefully you caught it early enough and Lacy will be just fine. Take a deep breath hon, you've done all you can do.
Hang in there!

Thanks Jade. I know that it was just a fluke. I didn't purposfully leave anything out to hurt her but I still feel terrible. I'm doing better now that I know her initial blood work is good but I won't feel normal again until she's home where she belongs, ya know.

I completely understand. If it makes you feel better, we treat NSAID overdoses almost weekly and I've only ever seen maybe one who didn't do well. With the correct therapy, they usually do great and go home, tails wagging.
Try not to take it out on yourself, as easy as that is to do.

These things happen, and they were obviously accidental. Go easy on yourself, surely your luck will change now (superstitious nonsense from me - bad things happen in 3's and that)

Take a breath, you did the right thing and she's getting the medical attention she needs. It was an accident and like Jade said, we treat them all the time at our clinic too. You can't predict everything and you can't prevent everything. You can just do your best and you've done that in getting her the medical assistance right away. We'll be thinking of her and prayer for both of you

I just got home from visiting Lacy at the vet hospital. It was so sad to see her with the iv wrapped up on her leg. But I did get to take her for her walk and her bowel movements looked normal aside from being darker from the charcoal. She was acting more like herself. Jumping up to be pet, even though I've been trying to discourage her from doing that, trying to make friends with the other dogs and she finally gave me kisses again. Last night no matter how many different ways I tried she would not lick me and normally she can't get enough licks in.
Because of the fact that she ingested far less than we originally thought the toxicologist believes that she is most likely out of danger for her liver but there is still a chance that her kidneys may be hurt by this. She got approx 10x the dose a dog her size should have IF she ate the number of pills that are unaccounted for currently. Out of a 60 pill perscription I found 44 knocked under the closet door or in her blanket and I have taken 10 or 11 that leaves 5 or 6 unaccounted for.
Luckily the vet seems highly optimistic for her recovery due to her blood work staying normal.
The guy in there today said it best, We moan and groan filling up the gas tank and fixing our cars and houses but when a pet gets sick we're willing to refinance everything to make sure that they'll be ok.

Hang in there and good luck! Accidents happen and we feel terrible when they do. But, she's in good hands and will have all of our happy vibes!
That financing statement is sooo true too, but I'm sure we're all in agreement...how can you put a price on the love they give us? They are worth it.

DOn't be so hard on yourself. It wasn't something you set up, obviosly. Its a mistake that could happen to anyone. Lacy sounds like she's well on her road to recovery. I'll send some healing vibes her way.

Lacy should be home tomorrow night. Her kidney indicator levels (can't remember the actual term) dropped from 23 to 7 in the last 24 hours. As long as her levels are normal tomorrow night she'll be able to come home! I'm so happy.
I went and visited her twice today and she was happy and playful both times. Tonight though she was wearing an E collar because she kept on chewing on her IV tubing, silly girl. It was so cute though because everytime she stopped to sniff something she had to put the whole collar down on the ground. My neighbor took pics on her cell phone... I'll try and get them loaded onto my computer somehow.

I am glad to hear she is doing good...I will keep her in my thoughts
when my small yorkie had the collar she would go to run after the other dogs and it would get caught in the grass and flip her over, it was so sad and so funny all at once...one of those moments your cuddling them going ahhhhh and laughing all at once lol
