...stay quiet when I'm in a different room and he knows that I'm in the next room. He's doesn't whine or bark when he knows I'm out of the house though.

BTW. He's 6 months old now.

The best way to stop that is to completely ignore him, don't go back in that room until he is quiet (if not possible to do that then crate him with a blanket over the crate so he can't see you and totally ignore him) and the second he is quiet race back in and praise him with a 'good quiet'. At the moment he is trying to get your attention by barking, which probably works cause like most normal people you probably go back to get him to be quiet right? Well you just need to teach him that you go back when he is quiet. At first it is difficult but dogs will bark and bark and bark until you go back in that room and give them what they want, cause the barking worked before, so they think they need to bark for longer. Imagine a dog that wills you back into the room by being quiet! That's what they learn but you've got to have patience, persistence, be quick at the praise, and maybe ear plugs if he gets too much

yea that's the problem because we have houses that are attached. and it seems like he could bark for hours. thanks.

He Can! Absolutely! And the longer he's permitted to do so the better he'll get at it and hours will turn into days and this problem will become huge.

Apologize to the neighbors ahead of time if you think it's bothering them. Bring them some cookies and a card that explains what you are going to do and that you're doing it for both their and your sanity in the long term future.

In just a couple of days of being strict and firm about the problem you pup will learn the new rules. Giving in to the pup will only make him last longer.

The sooner you nip it the better.... unfortunately it's going to require some 'tough love' on both sides
