Kirby & Seamus Picture Update

I finally got around to taking some pictures of the dogs at our new house. I think overall they like it MUCH better here than at the apartment and they enjoy getting to run around more outside.

HOWEVER, with the new fence we built, Kirby has already escaped SIX times! ! The first two times was from the gate--Sami didn't run an extra wire along the bottom so Kirby kept pushing and pushing at it until the fence bent and he scooted out, the other three times was from the front fence which was already there, is very old, and quite faulty. Kirby just found the weak spots and broke through. The last time was from Kirby DIGGING A HOLE under the new fence to get out.

And all this time, Seamus has stayed on the CORRECT side like the good little sheltie he is.

So, if you haven't guessed, we're always fencing up the fence.

Sleeping in bed.

Seamus saying, "Yes, Mama? Is it time to go outside!?"

"It's time to GO OUTSIDE!"

"I wasn't trying to get out, I swear!"

Blue Merle Lightning!

Kirby: Hey! Let's play!
Seamus: No, I just want to bark because I'm not supposed to!

"What was that sound? Let's bark it it!"

"I am THE Puff Daddy!"

"This ... is the Puff of Doom!"

Awe, they're just precious, and very photogenic! How do you get Kirby's hair so nice and clean? With all of the digging, I was expecting his paws and chest to be brownish, but his coat is so beautiful.

Your dogs are very adorable.

I just got a new house too with a new wood privacy fence. I ended up having to get a pet version of an electric fence to go around the bottom of our fence. Not b/c my dogs tried to get out, but b/c they were trying to eat the wood! But it also stops them from trying to dig under either. Each one got zapped once and they no longer try to get that close. It worked perfectly for me and I know it doesn't hurt them b/c I've got zapped a couple of times myself!

Thank you for the nice comments. The very under part of Kirby's paws are usually quite nasty, and so they get wiped off with a towel when he comes in. Any dirt/leaves that he usually gets from running around outside either falls out of his coat when he shakes or gets brushed out. The way the Samoyed coat is made, all those strong outer guard hairs don't let any dirt get into the soft, wooly underhair part. So, keeping him clean is not that hard--he just gets brushed 1-2 times a week. (More in the spring, though, because then he's shedding like a madman.)

Hehehe, Jodi, Kirby's 'puff' is expected to get even puffier when it starts to get really cold and is snowing. This is the first year his coat has been extra fluffy, which shows that he's finally getting an excellent adult coat (which is about on schedule, since most male Samoyeds don't get their full coat until they are around 3 years old). The hairs on his puff are so long at the end, they measure about 8 inches! Those are the worst ones to get in your food.

your dogs are beautiful. I have an escape artist also. she'll go over, under or thorugh. she's not picky. her mother is a small jrt, about 11 1/2" tall at the shoulder and small boned. she could scale a 6 ft chainlink fence like it was nothing. One day last year her owners took her hunting in OK with a hunting judge. They kept her and their other dogs in some of the judges kennels overnight. well they went to check on the dogs that night which were raising a rucus and discovered her gone. They searched for her for the entire night. The next morning when it was light enough to see they found her. she had tried to climb the fence at the back of the kennel and gotten her leg stuck in the top corner. It had never occurred to anyone she might be there and no one could hear her cries or hear if she answered their calls to her through the other dogs barking. unfortunately her leg was broken and frozen solid. they took her to a vet who said he couldn't do much until the swelling went down. They ended up taking her to their own vet who set the leg after the swelling had gone down. her leg had warmed and her paw pads were pinking up, but after many weeks it was decided that her leg just wasn't healing and needed to be removed. But don't feel sad for her. The little demon has found out that even missing a front leg she can still scale a fence. although i don't think she's escaped more than a 4 ft fence so far. she still loves to hunt also. basically all the accident has done is to retire her from the show ring. there's no stopping that dog. oh by the way. you know those wire crates with the little door at the bottom to slide the floor pan out of for cleaning? she opened the little door one day at a trial and squeezed herself right out of that little opening. it's only about 1 1/2- 2" high. That little girl is amazing. unfortunately her Houdini-ism is genetic because she apparently passed it on to her daughter who passed it on to her son. Fortunately the gene gets a bit weaker in each new generation. the grandson doesn't climb fences or go through them. he only digs under them and don't think you're gonna cover the hole, because every stone or whatever you place over the hole just means he has to dig a longer tunnel and being a dog from a breed that is bred to go underground and dig through tunnels and squeeze through very tight openings when needed he isn't the slightest bit miffed at having to do so.

here's a pic of the grandma a few months before losing her leg. this pic ended up on the cover of our registry magazine earlier this year.
