Question

Lump in Poppy's ear

Poppy was shaking her head this morning so I looked and she's got a hard lump in her ear. Do you think it's some kind of bite? It's very hot here at the moment so there's lots of bugs around and she does roll around in the grass. What do you think?

How big id the lump? Is it discharging or anything? Maybe you should call the vet and get some advice from your vet!

We had a dog that got harmless lumps a lot, but only as she got older. I guess lumps and bumps of any kind can be nothing, or signs of something more serious. With cats you have to be concerned about abscesses, but I don't know about dogs. If you're very concerned over it now I'd say see a vet. Otherwise I'd just watch for signs of perforation, keep track of its growth, see if it bothers your pooch, etc. Good luck!

Well she's made it bleed by scratching at it so it must be annoying her a bit but it's not driving her nuts. My mum reckons it's a bite, I don't think it's anything serious like a tumour and it's not very big so for now I'm going to keep my eye on it and bathe it later.

As soon as I see there's something wrong with either of my animals I panic, I think I must be neurotic or something!

Please take her to the vet... or give them a call with all the details... I really hope it is nothing ... I freak about stuff with my dogs too and I don't think I am neurotic... I think I'm being a responsible pet owner.

I agree with Leo as if it's making her that uncomfortable it should be looked at. Also they can get blood blisters from flapping thier heads to help allieviate the itch or discomfort. My lab did that after a bite and his ear became just horrible as a result of scratching and flapping which was worse then the actual bite.

I agree with Ally (Leo). I totally flip out if my baby has something wrong with him. That's normal for those of us who feel their pets are our babies. Please contact your vet & keep us posted on what's going on with your furbaby.

I'm a responsible pet owner, last year we spent £1000 finding out what was wrong with Poppy and the vets weren't very helpful but we persevered. I made myself very ill with worry (hence being neurotic) and didn't get much sleep for months because she was coughing every night and I'd sit up with her and clean up her messes. I have to feed her 4 times a day at the right times so her Megaesophagus doesn't flare up because if she has too much food at once she could end up with aspiration pneumonia again which is very frightening. My animals are my kids and I'd do anything for then but I don't think it's time for Poppy to go to the vets yet, when I get a bite I scratch it too and it's not annoying her very much, in fact I haven't seen her scratch it at all and I've been with her all day for 2 days. She must have done it just a couple of times. Sometimes it's not always the right thing to rush them straight to the vets just like I don't always rush to the doctors, she's fine in herself and not suffering, her ear's not infected and I'm checking on it a few times a day. If I thought she needed the vet I'd have taken her but I'm hoping it'll go away on it's own. If it gets worse or doesn't go or start to go in a few days she'll be straight to the vet. In the mean time I'm going to bathe the lump with some stuff the vet gave us for my rat, she said it could be used on my other animals too and I'll phone the surgery for advice.

I consider Leo to be one of my children and would be sick with worry if something like that happened to him.... I was purely commenting before that I don't think you are neurotic because you are just being a responsible pet owner... I don't rush my guys in to the vet everytime they puke something up either.... but if they are sick more than once in a 24 hour time period usually I will call the vet and ask them about it, sometimes one of the guys has to go in and other times they tell me to just wait it out and will give me an over the counter remedy with proper dosages for the situation. You were asking for advice on her ear.. mine was to either bring her in or to call the vet because I didn't feel qualified to give you medical advice or a home remedy. I really hope Poppy feels better soon.
