Mugzlee is microchipped. I love the idea. His tags simply say his name, our number, address, and "I'm microchipped".

I think that harnesses and collars can be slipped out of, cut, hung, etc.. and I love the idea that the microchip is permanent and he can never 'lose' it.

I saw on T.V. not too long ago that a couple times, the microchip failed. I know it's possible because it's an electronic chip but I never really thought about it like that. Has anyone heard anything else?

we tatoo and use ID tags but not microchips for one main reason. Ripley. he always gets away say right before a flyball tourny and without him we cant run(height dog) so he needs to be back with us as soon as absolute possable and because of his Tatoo he has been returned to us before we even realize he's gone. for example Ripley escaped right before easter break, all the person who found him had to do was call the shelter relay the tatoo number and was in contact with us right away, however if he was Microchiped instead of tatooed he would be gone the whole long weekend because they would have to take him to the shleter or the vet to have him scanned and these places were closing to the public for the weekend, meaning he would be gone the entire weekend. the thing is ANYONE can read a tatoo, however only 2 people can read a microchip, personaly I think you have better luck with a tatoo.

and also shadow is 8 years old and her tatoo and VERY clearly readable.

I guess it just mainly depends on the individual.

Do tatoos hurt though?

Sorta bringing this thread back as I have some additional questions on the subject. I will be getting a greyhound in a month or so and he won't be microchipped but we would like to. An added incentive is if any dog here is microchipped and have applied for a dog license that they only have a one time fee of $50 as opposed to $40 for the first year and $30 for every year thereafter. I'm wondering how long this procedure takes, as the first post mentioned 2 minutes or so, it's like a needle injection and the dog doesn't have to go under or anything? Can it be done on the fly or do they have to order chips in and it's like a 3 week wait before they can go into the dog?

Yes its a needle injection that places the rice size ship in the neck area just above the sholder blades, at least thats where my dogs have theirs. It takes even less than 2 minutes and the dogs barely notice, mine didn't have a clue. The vets in this area always have them in stock but you may just want to call ahead to make sure they have them. Just make sure that you send your paper work in immediately. I think that is the biggest problem with the chip is that the owners don't take care of their information like they should.

In Finland is is usually only the show animals that are microchipped because all dogs and cats are required to be chipped with their registration information in order to enter the show.

That means Kirby is chipped, but Seamus and the girls aren't and I don't know if I will ever have them chipped since it is VERY costly in Finland and the shelters here don't generally check for chips, anyway. It's not common enough to where I feel that in Finland it would be beneficial to have done.

And, Kirby's chip only says that he is Kirby and gives his show name and Finnish Kennel Club registration number. So, if he ever did run away and a shelter DID check his chip, they would have to contact the Finnish Kennel Club to find out Sami's information--it wouldn't show up right away and getting info from the FKC can take some time. It's just better if the animals have a tag the shelters can look at, since most shelters don't check for chips or even have the devices to do so.

Indy has a tattoo in his ear and Myfanwy is chipped but they were both done before we got them.
She has a tag saying she is chipped and indy has a name and address tag.
I had to get the name tag from UK so I will have to get her one from UK too.
But sometimes the collars can fall off.
Indy ran off the other day and Maria grasped his collar and it came off so he was not wearing his tag but he came back

Just to add to the convo, our dog was chipped when we got her from the shelter. Even though we didn't know it at the time, we soon found out that every rescue around here has a scanning wand, and even a lot of PEOPLE! My mother in law's next door neighbor does a lot of work with rescues and taking in strays, and she just went ahead and bought her own chip scanner.

We got Clover from the pound... if she'd had a microchip, she may still be with her original owners.

I microchipped Cody and Joey.

Cody was chipped in two seconds and I think I was more nervous than he was. They took him away though and wouldn't let me watch. They did bring the scanner out to show me that he was chipped though. I heard a cat howling when they took mine away and I wasn't sure if it was him or not. I hope not!!!

Cody cost my $75 dollars. The brand they used was Animal Recovery Systems. All I had to do was send in the info.

Joey was done while he was being neutered! On Monday! And his cost $45. It is an Avid. I also had to send in $15 dollars to register him. They also have a one time $40 charge if you have multiple pets who are chipped. Up to 8 pets.

I definitely feel better that they are both chipped. Kitty has accidentally gotten out before but luckily she didn't go farther than the front door. I know that if Cody got out though I would never find him. Thats why I feel much safer that way. My cats are inside cats and they do not wear collars.

I'm always nervous that if Joey got away someone would try to keep him! Although I'm not sure how the microchip would work in that situation or if it would, but it makes me feel a litter better. That and the fact that if he ever got out or away he would have the chip.

I actually don't feel their chips. I haven't looked on Joey, but on Cody I can't feel it at all. It has only been about a year since he's been chipped.

I give microchips Although I have not had to use them so far and I'm crossing my fingers that I don't have to. At least I have some assurance that they will come home.

wow! this was an ooold thread before.

i have both the dogs chipped. when i got chaquita, they wouldn't release her unless it was done so while i was there i just had penny done. the only problem is that was in oklahoma and we don't use the same chip system here in texas. but the vets told me that if they scan their avid chips with the other company's scanner, that it would show that an avid chip is in there and they would just borrow a scanner from somewhere. so that's good.

i'm totally getting charlie done very soon because he's indoor/outdoor. i'd say do it!

So there are even different brands of chips? Oh my....umm, ok, should or do I have to specify the one I want, do some work differently than others? I'm in Ontario so I don't know if the chips differ from Canadian ones to American ones.
