AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Help is at hand for pet owners and their neighbours troubled by barking dogs -- soothing recordings of "new age"-style music blended with sounds of nature.

"Piano music with twittering birds and murmuring water apparently has a soothing effect on dogs," said a spokesman for LindeTree, the company marketing the new age CD.

"The owner can put it on whenever he leaves the house or needs some peace of mind."

The firm's idea was inspired by research at the University of Belfast into the effect of different types of music on 50 dogs: heavy metal songs caused them to howl and growl; classical music calmed them down.

Maybe some of us should try this to see if it really works or not. It's worth a shot if it will calm our furbabies!

You know this is actually true.... My mom has always had a "classical" station playing on their little kitchen radio when they aren't home and it works wonders for her doxies. We do the same here, however it is kind of hard to find a classical station in Italy so right now they get a normal station, so I'm guessing our dogs and cats probably know better Italian than we do
If this is supposed to help in barking I wonder if the Italian community here will mind if we play classical music over a loud speaker when our dog's are outside who knows it could help control Ajax's chronic barking, hehehehe!!!!

Hehe, Kim, maybe all those Italian doggies need is a little Mozart.

I wonder if this will also work for cats to calm them down? I sure could use a few peaceful moments from my wild things!

chocolatepuppy is on a distinguished road
If you crank up 'any' music loud enough(like I crank up my country music when cleaning) you might at least get them to leave the room!
