My dog won't stop licking things until they are soaked??

My 2 year old collie and german shep mix, Rosco won't stop licking spots on the floor or bed until they are soaked. Does anyone know why he does this and how I can get him to stop? I is a pain when you are in bed and there is a huge wet spot, yuck!

One of my dogs does the same thing and nothing seems to stop her .It has to be something that the dog smells in the fabric?!
If you figure out a solution to this yucky problem let me know.

It might have something to do with stress, boredom or your dog being over anxious about something -- does he get adequate mental and physical stimulation?

My dog will chew through my clothes sometimes. It is odd I have to make sure to keep my clothes in the laundry room and not on the floor. I think it has a little to dowith boredom...and maybe they like the taste? Or soemthing?

Did it happen suddenly? Or was it always like this? Might be something in the environment changed ....

That's true!

Hey, I think he might be a bit bored. He has our other dog, Jack, to play with, but they haven't gotton out much with it being winter time here. But it is starting to warm up, so we will start going out again. I hope that will help. And he does have the habbit of chewing on clothes if I don't have enough chew bones laying around. For some reason my bras are the only thing he likes to chew on He just had to pick the one thing that isn't all that cheap...

Angry

my mini dauchunds does the same thing--it doesn't matter if its fabric or skin! The funny thing she loves to lick my husbands legs! It must be the hair! I just figured this was her and we couldn't stop her if we tried! We just try and deal with it and tell her to stop until she does and she usually does after a few times of being told that

My Dachshunds do that as well. Especially on the bed when we are trying to get to sleep. All we have to do though is tell them "Leave It" and they will stop, but sometimes they wait a few minutes and start again. That's the most we can do to get them to stop. They do though, but then it's a whole new day and we have to do it again. lol.

My dogs have that problem with people. They love it in the summer when people wear shorts. I find it hard to bring them places and keep from licking the backs of peoples legs How embarrassing!

As for the licking the floor, definitely sounds like anxiety. Just to pinpoint exactly what happens and what the circumstances were around the time of the event.

Thanks everyone...I am glad to know that Rosco isn't the only one. The only thing I can think of that would be bothering him is that with it being winter time he doesn't get to go to the parks much. It's freezing here so he has to stay inside most the time. I think it will get better whne spring rolls around. Thanks all!!

Soapaddict- you gotta love your dachies! I have tried to find a site devoted just to this breed and haven't been successful! I have found one for my dane! I would love to hear what others owners have to say about their little hot dogs!

We too go through this night after night after night! My friends who are NOT attached to any type of animal whatsoever (kinda of strange and loney if you ask me ) can't beleive that they are even in our bed! But, what can I say...they were too cute to let them cry when they were itty bitty babies! We are suckers! I have to say though-my kids sleep in their own beds--we don't have room for them!lol!!!!!!

Cool

I know that in cats (will have to read up & see if it is in dogs, too) there is a syndrome which causes them to have an obsession with chewing on something cloth. Of course, I found this out because I had a cat who would walk around the house with a wash cloth in his mouth crying.

My daughter's doxie will lick on their Golden until she has hair balls and has to expel them. She has also licked a place on one of her legs to the point of it being infected. She has been on steroids to help make her stop but they've taken her off of them to do alergy testing. Dexter is about 8 or 9 years old and just started this thing with his "arm" this winter.

My girls, who of course do nothing wrong (HA!) sit in the leather recliners with us and lick, lick, lick. We eat in there sometimes so at first I assumed they were after a bite of food but now I think it is a habit that they have kept up just to annoy me.

Obviously, no help on the why or how to stop them. We've given our dogs chews toys to try to distract them to no avail. I try my best to ignore it but it finally gets the best of me.

I think that they have found yet another way to drive us crazy and are going to slowly lick their way into taking over the world.

That is soo funny. Maybe you are right. I think animals are much smarter than people think, they know how to annoy us, and be all cute and sweet when it's something they want. We tried to make it so our dogs sleep on the floor and not the bed. So hat they do is they wait about half an hour after everyone is supposed to be "asleep" and they really slowly crawl up on the bed, by morning they have all the covers and Rosco(our german shep/collie mix) is layingon top of my hubby. It is the greatest, he loves to lay on my hubby's back and lay his head on top of his too. I will have to post a pic for everyone, it's the greatest!
In the end we give up and let them sleep up there, at least we have them trained not to take the whole bed this way, and everyones happy.!!

The big problem is when our 4 cats get up there too, we just need a room that is one huge bed and nothing else, LOL!!!

I have a rotty that I rescued 2 months ago. She has separation anxiety too so I dont know if that has something to do with it. But she licks our bed, blankets and my clothes when they are on me. I really hate it when she licks my jeans to the point that they are wet. Yuck cuz you know jeans never dry. It gets annoying sometimes but I just let her go. I guess she is just showing her love!
