My Puppy Ginger.

Ok,I've had my puppy Ginger for 2 months now. I love her to death. But she keeps using the bathroom places she is not suppose to. I'm paper training her. She does pretty good I guess. I just wish she wouldn't go places she isn't suppose to go. Can someone help me? I know it takes longer to house break a dog then a cat. But any tips would be nice. I'm also posting a picture of her tell me what you thank.

Thanks,
Tina

How cute! What breed is she?

May I ask why you are paper training her instead of training her to go outside?

(I'll look for and post some articles to help you - search this section, as there already may be one or two.)

And welcome to the group!

Hi Tina: It is usually that they have access to the whole house so they don't learn as quickly where is acceptable and where isn't. The crate or leash method are the easiest but you already will have places that your pup will go back to because unless you use something like club soda or a product from your petstore to remove urine stains puppies will tend to go back to those spots. So with that thought in mind always leave a small peice of the paper that the puppy has soiled with the clean paper when you put it down. Christi will find tons of site with the crate method, that is one of the most used now adays. The leash method is good for the daytime when you are with her. Just attach the leash to your belt loop and off you go doing what ever but puppy will give you signs when he has to go, getting squirmy, whinning etc. Take him to his paper or outside and only then let him off the leash for a while. The other thing is not to give water all day long. Give him his bowl of water , let him have a good drink then lift his bowl, this way you know when he is drinking and gives you a good idea when he is going to need to use the potty. Usually within about 20 to 30 mins.
But cleaning the old urine stains and containing the pup to a smaller area(except under supervision) will be the best start to getting the puppy on a schedule. Don't forget their little bladders are small and never having a mistake is tough for some. There are many methods and hundreds of sites that will explain it better then me probably lol.
Good luck with your new fur-baby

The funny thing about the crate ty is i had to use it for my rottie when i first got him. I use a huge vari kennel meant for a great dane type dog. He then had it for his sleeping den cause he loves it without the door on it anymore. Well I need a large cage for temp quarters for someone else the other day . I put his blanket down in the spot of his crate . He went to that spot and stood there with a really dumb look on his face and starting turning and turning around. Like hey guys there is definitely something missing here. He loves his crate.

If you go into your local pets store they may have some pamphlets on crate training - I know that Midwest crates makes one. If you are having "number 2" accidents you might want to schedule meals also.

Make sure that the crate isn't too big either. If they have enough room they will be able to sleep far enough away from an accident and would defeat the purpose of crate training.

Hey does anyone have an opinion whether to use an actual crate or kennel. I have seen both used and wondering if any difference was noted.

I actually always use my kennel then when trained it becomes their den area. By doing my dogs love the kennel , it is their secure area and when traveling valla the den is mobile , goes into the van , never a problem. But then i have a few sizes of vari kennel so if they outgrow it i have another.

Usually people refer to the square wire ones as crates and the plastic cozy ones as kennels.

Unless you are literally using a homemade crate , it can be done lol. But again they are usually wood and wire.

With a puppy though i would rather use the plastic kennel, easier for cleaning and the kennel is more enclosed for a more secure feeling on the pups part.

I always considered a kennel a crate too and I personally would prefer to use them. I like the idea of the dog being able to travel in its "home". Thanks, I just wanted to know before I adopted a puppy (or two).
