Myfanwys steralisation op

I thought that vets liked to steralise dogs early?
We wanted to get them both done at the same time but when we phoned they said that they wont do Myfanwy till she has bled twice. Wont that be like in a years time?
Can anyone tell me about what to do with her when she is on heat as i have never had a girl dog before.
i am scared she might escape and get pregnant.
Why do you think they wont do her now?

I've never heard of that. How bizarre. Have you talked to other vets??

Extreme caution when she is in heat is important. You have to be on guard. Watch her while she's outside and don't let her out without you.

That's odd... I got Odie and Charlotte done together... Odie was 5 months, Charly 4... I'd say the same as Chrisanne, while inside, keep her in a room where she can't get out, and when you take her out to potty, keep her on leash, to be sure that she doesn't get in trouble. Can you try calling a different vet and ask if they would do it early?

That's insane! Can you find another vet? Over here it costs MORE to do it after they've had their first heat. There is no reason for the dog to wait. And then you have the risk of her getting pregnant. I can not imagine what's this vets reasoning is.

Yea, I'd agree with everyone else on seeing if you could find another vet. Usually animals are fixed before they go into heat for the first time. There is no reason to do it afterwards.

they do say that there could be a risk of bladder weakness in old age if the female as not been in season once but i've not none any vets not to do it unit the 2nd season
it should be up to you, like i say it is a risk but thats up to you and the vet should let you pick if you want to go ahead or not.
i'm in the UK and have worked in vets for awhile now and this is what most say.

Be pushy about it, Sheryl. I would NOT wait until she's had two seasons to have her spayed. It's best to have it done BEFORE she goes into season.

Get ugly with them and tell them to get out of the Dark Ages! It's very, very stupid of them to insist on her having two seasons before they will spay her!

We rang 2 vets.
i thought it was very stupid and it is my dog so I say what is best for her right?
I will try again coz I want her done before we go UK in September as she will be about due to start when we leave and maybe the person who looks after will have problems with her.

i agree she is yours and it is up to you, there are no reasons (other than previously mention that pose a slight risk) that she should not be done NOW.

I'm agreeing with everyone else. Tell 'em you'll be looking at another vet for services from now on... that's ridiculous! If it isn't harmful to her, and obviously its done often other places, and you feel she should be done now then its your decision. You pay them to do it so they should do it!
