New Puppy
Ok, like I have said in another thread we adopted a 3 month old Pomeranian. This is my first puppy. We have another dog but we adopted him when he was 4 years old.
Now my hubby has raised and trained puppies but its been 20 years. Our older dog is my first dog in my life. He is such an awesome dog I wanted another one and a playmate for him. I actually was looking for an older dog but we couldn't find one that Smeagol was happy with. He isn't 100% happy about the puppy but he ignores him right now. Well, unless the puppy trys to bounce on his head then Smeagol gets a tad bit grumpy.
Did I do a mistake but getting a Pomeranian? Since we have gotten him I have had people tell horriable things about the breed.
We are crate training him. We have had him for about 4 days and only 2 potty accidents so far. Imho he has done good at going potty. We can say lets go potty and go to the door. He'll follow us out, go potty and follow us in. I give Smeagol a lot of credit on this cause we can open the door let him out he goes and comes back in with us just waiting at the door and the puppy follows his lead on this but of course we walk out with the puppy.
Any advise or warning what I'm in for and what I need to watch out for? We already puppy proof the house and his first vet visit is this saturday.
What kind of training do I do now with him? I know their like babies and don't expect a lot from him right now but I don't want to do less then what can be done with him now.
How do I help Smeagol to except the puppy?
Also I want to ask everyones opinion about microchipping? I never thought about it with Smeagol cause he won't leave my side for anything outside. But with Wicket(the puppy) I'm afraid he can run off and it's so simple for someone to remove his collar and try to claim him as theirs. I have read up on it and wonder if anyone has done it? Is there side effects or anything with it?
Thanks and here's a pic of Wicket.

Wicket is so cute, and I LOVE that name!
My grandma has a female pom and I think she's a nice little dog. She is a bit yappy, but I think that's because my grandma has her spoiled rotten. That's my grandma's little princess that can do no wrong.
My girls are micro-chipped and there's really nothing to it. They use a little bit bigger needle than what's used for vaccinations and give them the "shot" (that has the chip in it...only about the size of a grain of rice) and they're done. It might be a little sore in that area the rest of the day, but no real side effects.

He's beautiful! I don't know anything about the breed, but I thought I'd answer your questions about the microchipping. I really do think it's a wonderful invention and every pet should be microchipped. If Wicket gets lots and his collar or tags fall off, it's the only way that anyone would know that he belongs to you.
Ein and Tucker were both microchipped before we got them. I had Colleen microchipped at her first vet appointment with us. It's literally just like getting a shot. She didn't whine or squirm. No side effects.
As for puppy stuff, you're on the right track by doing crate training/etc. I would also start to work on basic commands like come, sit, and stay. We have trained all of our dogs on our own (though Colleen's foster mom took her to classes at Petsmart), but if you are unsure of what to do, many places that have obedience classes have puppy classes.
Good luck with your new puppy!

Lesson: Remember to take time to think about what's truly important. Oh, and give your pets a hug.

mine are all microchipped...even though they never leave my side I got it done because things happen sometimes...
your new baby is adorable my cousin raised poms...lol they are jumpy little fur balls lol...but they were always so lovable...when we introduced our dogs we made sure to give equl attention at all times lol otherwise there was jealousy...we let them get to know each other at their own pace never forced it...good luck

What a sweet baby!
I am DESPERATE to find someone who will do GPS chipping. Stella is a sneaky butt and will get away at any cost. I literally have her fence chained and padlocked and she's almost figured it out - its only been two days!
Regular chipping only works if they get picked up by someone with a chip reader - vet, shelter, etc.

Pomeranians are great little dogs, though they are not for everyone. There is no such thing as a bad dog or a bad breed, so I wouldn't listen to all that bad mumbo jumbo about Pomeranians.

Sounds like a good start right there. Have you done research on Pomeranians? That can help you be prepared for what to expect as your Pom pup grows up.

Keep at the housetraining. Patience and consistency will work wonders. In a few months he'll be doing real well in that area. :] I would recommend looking into some obedience classes for puppies. It's a great way to bond to your puppy and start getting puppy used to being around other people and dogs. Speaking of which, have you thought about socialization? Puppies need to be socialized so they can grow up to be well-rounded adult dogs. And if puppy hasn't yet been taught bite inhibition I would begin teaching that.

Microchipping can be a great form of identification. They're quick to insert, no more difficult on a dog than a vaccination, relatively cheap, cannot be removed by a person wishing to steal your dog and cannot just fall or break off of a collar. They can migrate, however, so when you take your dog in for a check-up I would suggest asking your vet to scan and make sure the chip hasn't migrated. It's good to know where on your dog's body the chip ends up, should it move. Microchips have also been known to go missing sometime after insertion, though this is uncommon.
Be aware that while beneficial, microchips are not perfect. One big drawback is that there are different brands of chips and therefore different brands of chip scanners. If your dog gets lost and later is found by someone who does not have the right scanner they might not be able to read the microchip.
I wish you luck with your new pooch! :]

Cute!
I would recommend the micro-chipping. I mean, it's really nice knowing that they have permanent tags. Plus, even if the place has a different brand of scanner, it will still tell them there's a chip there, and usually they will keep checking with different brands. Plus, if the dog's tags are still on, their micro-chip tag will be on there with their number and everything (with the company's phone number).
I've met a couple of poms, and they were both super sweet.
Sounds like you're doing a wonderful job potty-training! I'd just keep up the good work! And you can start doing basic training now. Then in a couple months you can take him to puppy school.
Good job!

(i've also owned (well my parents but i knew the dogs and breeds) chihuahuas, poodles, rotts, etc.
