nic cubes as a dog crate?

do you think I can pull it off? Dog crates are stupidly exspensive! And I cant find any where i live, i would have to go to the next town over and its an hour away. that is just simply too far right now. but somewhere near by has nic cubes. i wonder if i can make a good dog crate out of them? I dont see why not?

Wouldn't the dog just chew it apart? The NIC cubes just don't seem strong enough to hold a dog...especially a large breed. But maybe I'm wrong.

Maybe you can find a cheaper crate used or something?

I didn't mean the actual cubes but rather the connector ties...unless you use something else to hold them together? I don't know...I've never used them to make a cage though when my mom had a daycare we used them for shelves.

I have 10 hours to do that, i dont think i can find one that quickly.
IF i dont find one, it not a big deal, i have a nice pen outside as a last resort for when i am sleeping or gone until i get a crate

If the cage clips are strong enough and you have a bunch then it might work but I guess it would depend on how destructive the puppy is .

And I'm sure you know this but don't make the crate that large...if the puppy has alot of extra room he might go potty.

yup, i know!
thanks anyway!

i looks like he will be outside in the pen when i am sleeping or gone but it is a nice pen. its large, and its in the shade. its got a dog house and pretection from the elements. It will do just fine for now.

He is used to being in a pen at night anyway because thats where the breeders are keeping him at night. So I may stick with that since he is used to it. I dont know... it will do until i get a crate.

Your SIL decided not to give you the crate ... WalMart, Target, and Kmart all sell crates have you tried there? If they didn't have any I would at least try the nic cubes with Zip Ties until you can buy a crate .... anything is better than leaving him outside overnight especially if it was to rain or get cold. With him being an older puppy you are already going to have your work cut out for you teaching him to trust you and that you are the top dog ... putting him outside that first night could be a strike against that.
(This is nothing personal against you, I am just hardcore against having dogs outside overnight or during the day for extended periods of time alone, especially when a lot of animal like Raccoons, Possums, Wolves, Coyotes, Foxes, Skunks, Poisonous Snakes and Poisonous Bugs/Spiders could easily gain access to a pen with Dirt Floors and a 6 month puppy in a pen alone would have no means of escape or protection from any of those things).

I know ultimately you want him to be an inside dog and completely applaud you for that... I just think with training it would be easier to set those ground rules from day 1 so you aren't sending him mixed messages ... with most dogs consistency is the key.

AWESOME that she is gonna pic one up for you MIL's can be so awesome sometimes!!!!

When my hubby and I were first married we lived in the middle of nowhere Central NY, it wasn't "Deliverance middle of no where", but it was a good 45 min to a town big enough for a Walmart and then that was your only choice.... it was over an Hour to a Target or Petco/Petsmart or any stores really worth shopping at. Now that we live in MI, I am about 10 minutes away from any store I could really want to go to (exception is IKEA which is 3 hours from here).
Please trust me when I say I sympathize with you..

Glad things are worked out.I was gonna suggest looking in the paper for used ones.Or even put a wanted ad in there.I am always seeing crates/kennels in the paper for sale...kind of a shame that people wanna sell them,we could ALWAYS use donations of crates for the office! And for shipping.

its great that shes getting you a crate for him, i think the NIC cubes could work for a small dog as a temperary thing, as long as he wasnt super distructive. I would over lap them a row tho, and use the cable ties , that way it would give you lots of extra space to put ties..

yeah glad to hear you are getting a crate. consistancy is the key with dogs. i was going to say that you do the same thing from day 1. we recently adopted a dog and started him in a crate right away and now he loves it. not to mention it saves our house and possesions from sure destruction.
