No pig ears, so what now??
SO let me first start off by saying last Sunday I awoke to the worst case of the runs that any living creature could ever have! Petey my 5-6 month old puppy ate something, that just didnt agree with him. Even after a week, his poop is still mushy and green! So after searching the threads I figured it out- its the PIG EARS!!! SO now that I know to cut them out what else could I give him to keep him happy and busy??? The pig ears lasted him a good hour of being an angel!! He had hooves and a stuffed bones but that doest do it!! Any suggestion??

I would try cow ears. Not only are they bigger than pig ears so they will last longer, but they aren't as greasy.
eta: Most rawhide is made of cow hide, so if rawhide doesn't make him sick, I would imagine cow ears would be just fine. If you've had problems with rawhide, the cow ears might not be a great idea.

That is the reason why I never gave my dogs pig ears. Actually, pork of any type can give dogs really bad gas and diarrhea.
Bully sticks are great so are Merrick flossies.

Try and go to an independently run pet store. Actually, Petco may have them. I went to a Petco and they are carrying all natural dog food and treats!

Another tip, stay away from cow hooves! They have been known to cause impactions in the intestines. They are very sharp!

We give our dogs raw beef bones and they keep them busy for hours . Bully sticks are great but last like...five minutes .
Rawhide isn't recommended for puppies and might make him sick anyways. Plus, rawhide is a big choking hazard for dogs that chew a lot.

I give Stella stuffed shin bones - one has peanut butter, the other meat flavored...goop. You have to be careful not to let them slob all over the nice white couch, but otherwise...keeps her busy, when NOTHING else will.
... except the can of Kong stuffing. Which she chews until it explodes...all over the walls, floors, furniture, ceiling...

We used to hit up the meat department or local butchers for there large beef bones. I would always parboil them, allow them to cool then give them to our dogs. It kept them busy for several hours actually. No preservatives and usually they have a little bit of beef left on them to pull at. I tried rawhide once and ende up having to pull the large string of it from my dogs throat as he managed to untie the bone knot. I then tried just a flat type and same thing. The choking hazard is just too risky. Only other type I bought were the large basted beef bones at Petsmart or other pet shops. But still have to watch for splintering.

My dogs are only given Nylabones and Kong's as chew toys... Pigs Ears, Rawhide, other bones etc. pose to much of a choking risk, that I don't take that risk.... Keep in mind that I am VERY overprotective when it comes to my kids, both human and fur, so maybe I am a spoil sport and don't allow them to have fun with bones etc., but I don't feel like chancing my dog having to go through emergency surgery to have a piece of bone or whatever removed from their intestines when it causes a blockage. IMO it just isn't worth the risk. (I wasn't always so paranoid, my dog Ed almost died choking on a piece of rawhide 5 years ago, so ya, I learned my lesson)
My Kong's are stuffed daily and also inspected for cracks... I have never had a Kong break and IMO they are the best product out there. If it only takes your dog 2 seconds to get the stuff out try freezing it, it will last longer, buy 3 Kong's for each dog you have so you always have one stuffed and ready in the freezer..... you have to put the money out front to pay for the Kong but after a few months they pay for themselves (I only buy treats for stuffing now... I don't have to buy new bones and chew things every week). I usually stuff with peanut butter, dog food, cheese and a couple of treats for the bigger guys and usually peanut butter & treats for Leo.
IMO this is a much safer alternative to bones, ears, hoofs etc.

I was just wondering...have you tried the raw beef bones? I just don't understand how there would be a choking hazard with those. They aren't cooked and pieces can't break off . Our dogs have had some of the same bones for years.
Maybe our dogs are strange, but I've actually had one or two Nylabones that had pieces break off. Of course, Rocky is a crazy chewer .
And I totally second the Kongs although Rocky can destroy all of them except the classic ones.

I heard that as long as the bones aren't cooked as well!! They had a special on the new last night about hazards for your pets during Christmas time.
On another note I went to Petco last night!! I got Petey a bad of all natural raw hide- peanut butter flavor, although they did have pig ears alternatives it was still a pork product so I didn't want to risk it! (anyone try those before?) He wasn't into them as much as the pig ears though! I also got him a bigger kong, and a stuffed foot ball with ropes coming out of each end- which he totally loved! Even this morning he just layed at my feet as I did my hair and makeup chewing on it!!
I still want something like the pig ears that keep him so busy chewing, my friend who raises dogs for the blind gives hers real meat marrow bones from the butcher, she said she boils them then cleans them out. Any opinions??
