The only suggestion I can give ya, is what I had to do with Scooby when he was a puppy, he had this thing of when he finally comprehended to go potty outside, he would do the other thing inside. I bought those scented puppy pads, and although they helped a little they didn't quite do the trick, so I went out and bought a kennel, everytime Scooby pee'd or did his other business on the rug, I would let him know he was a bad boy by doing this, show him where he was supposed to go (on the puppy pad) and then put him in his kennel for a brief time out. As time went on, and this continued, his time-out's became a little longer each time, eventually he caught on, and totally blew the puppy pad thing off all together, and began whining to go outside. Like I said I had a more of a problem with him pooping inside the house verses going potty, but I'm sure it is the same technique. With a little patience, training and time, I'm sure your friend will have the new puppy broke in no time. Also take in consideration, that depending on the breed or mix of the puppy, it could be in his nature to be stubborn, so that might take just a little bit of a stronger hand to train him. Before I forget, if your friend does use the puppy pads, after the puppy catches on to that is where he is supposed to go and not the carpet, she will eventually need to move the pads closer and closer to the door, and this will let the puppy learn that outside is where he is supposed to go. I wish your friend the best of luck, as potty training a puppy isn't always an easy task.

We didn't get lucky trained until she was a year old, we finally figured out that she's a crate dog. Put her in a crate at night to sleep, when were not home, or if we're busy and can't watch her. When we watch tv, we gate her in the same room so she's always in sight. If she'd go to squat, we'd interupt her with some annoying noise or a firm NO.
Good luck, it get's old after that long that's for sure!

Rocheal your very welcome, and I wish your friend lots of luck... and Erin, we kinda have to do the same with our dogs, they are gated to the upstairs at night, and gated in the kitchen when we are gone. They don't have free run of the house while we are sleeping or away, they like to play way to much, inturn breaking things, and causing all kind of trouble, hahaha.... But over all they are wonderful dogs
