Pit Bull Poll

A news station has a poll up regarding whether or not pit bulls should be banned. The poll is in the middle of the right hand side on the page - I thought you PB lovers would want to vote!

I think we all know how I feel on the subject! Mine are on their way to being therapy dogs (however at not yet 8 months old I am the one needing therapy right now LOL)

They're already banned in one of the counties down here in South Florida.

Pits can be great dogs, I think that it is a matter of how they are treated. If they are mistreated they are going to be mean.

I personally don't like Pits because generally, all the ones I've seen are mean. However, I do agree that it is also a matter of how they are raised and treated. As for them being banned, I don't think that's fair. There are other mean dogs out there and Pits shouldn't be the ones who are being singled out. No dogs should be banned, IMO. But I do think most are mean.

Unhappy

I don't think pit bulls should be banned. How about banning the breeders and owners that use these animals as ammunition? It infuriates me when society gives a specific breed of dog a bad rep because of the ignorance of human beings!

My husband and I fostered a pit bull for a week and she was the sweetest dog I have ever encountered. I have a connection with pit bulls and when my husband and I buy a house, I am planning on adopting from an organization that rescues pit bulls. They are amazing dogs and if raised the correct way, can be loving and loyal. Owning a pit bull means taking responsibility for the breed and it is important to know how to handle them in such a way they aren't taught to be aggressive.

I firmly believe that ANY animal can be made mean if treated inappropriately. It so happens that pit bulls are very powerful dogs and unfortunately if, in the wrong hands, can be very dangerous animals.

Hmm. I came across this today:

http://www.nbc6.net/news/1712501/det...110102002&ts=H

Really made me upset! I think those people shouldn't be allowed to own dogs and jailed. I also read a few weeks ago about a man that severly abused his Jack Russel and swung him over his head like a lasso and swung him against a fence. THOSE CRIMES INFURIATE ME!!

We had a thing in the paper recently where a golden retriever attacked a kid and required a ton of stitches to the kid's head. In the article, the whole family attested that the kid never harrassed the dog. Does that mean we should ban retrievers, too? I agree with y'all- there are some breeds that require more obedience training than others, but any breed can be a good companion if treated with compassion and love!

I LOVE pitbulls. They are by far my FAVORITE breed of dog, up there with the greyhound. When i'm older, I dream of owning a few pitbulls, training them to become thearpy dogs, and helping people who need it. I really want to set a good example of the breed, not a bad one- they don't deserv what they are getting now. It's not their fault, its their stupid owners. I've met quite a few pitbulls , and none have been mean to me. One gave me a fat lip.....why? Because she was sooo happy to be petted, she jumped up on me like any other dog would, and her paw hit my lip. The other one, knocked me over....to smother me in kisses! He came right up to me, and just plowed me over, and just gave me tons of kisses! There were two pits that i never did trust- they were NOT taken care of, no food, water trained for fighting ect- but id ont blame them. You only hear the bad of the breed , anymore.

I know htat if i get a pitbull , my dad wont come to visit me, because he hates them. My mom, would want it locked away, because she doesn't like it, my best friend is scared to death of them, just because they are pitbulls. when the one came over to me to be petted, she RAN, and thought it was going to kill me, because it knocked me down and was kissing me... ? If i lose friends and family doesn't visit me, still i'll be happy toknow i finally have my dream dog, and will be happy to know that I can make a difference, maybe not a lot, but a difference sorry for the loooong rant lol

IMO

I agree with mostly everyone's comments on this thread. We currently own a pit bull, Jake, he's 5 yrs old now & is the SWEETEST dog ever. My bf had to 'rescue' him from his ex-gf who wasn't treating him so nice (leaving him home all day alone, not paying attention to him, ect). One thing I've learned from living with him is that pits are pretty co-dependant dogs. Meaning they can't just be shoved into a backyard & forgotten about. It literally drives them crazy. Jake goes everywhere with us. We recently went on a trip up to Idaho & he came. Boy did we have fun hiking, fishing, playing in the snow, ect. Here is a picture of him that we took on the trip. (He might look mean, but he is the sweetest dog, I promise)

I just have to comment on this, myself because my parents have two pit bulls. If it weren't for them, I do not know where either of my parents would be. First of all, my dad has a severe case of muscular dystrophy, and both Toby and Dutchie have made my dad play with them. And Dutchie, especially, has made my dad excercise his arms, in a very, very unusual way. Where my dad is not supposed to have any muscle growth whatsoever, just deteriation, has had growth. Which is considered to be nothing the the average person, but is absolutely miraculous for my father.

Toby and Dutchess are also the best protectors of my parents 4 kittens, 2 that are 9 months old, and 2 that are 2 months old. I will give one example of Toby's gentleness and protection over his kittens. He is always cuddling and gentling playing with one of them. But during Thanksgiving, my grandmother's pug, Tanya, her rambuctious self wanted to play it sort of rough with Buddy, who is 9 months old and the size of a beagle, Toby stood in the middle of the them, and gave a gentle, gentle growl, and Tanya backed off. Not that Toby would do anything.

We currently live next door to a pit--and to very honest I haven't ever encountered a nice pit bull! Course I am from the south and there are alot of "bubbas" who don't give the training they need! I am very big on training an animal (dog)! My neighbors were suppose to replace their side of the fence and although they did they didn't replace any of the rotten posts that holds up the fence the Pit jumps up on the fence and the fence sways! I am very nervous about letting my children out there in the back yard which is not fair!

But then again we do live in a free country. The owners do not keep the dog in their yard-due to poor fencing! And the dog terrorizes the people around them! The dog got out the other day and scared the living day lights out of the kids who were coming home to school!!! I know the people are the ones to be upset with but WHY have an animal who could hurt someone! My vet told me that in the case of the dog getting into my yard or when I am out walk my Dane that the dog will probably go for my dogs first! My kids safety comes first as well as the safety of my animals!

:blob7: I'll get off my soap box now!
