Question

Question about Whiskers

Ok, like I have said in other threads, Smeagol is my first dog. We got him groomed the second day we had him.

Smeagol was a rescue and the people who had him before us didn't do anything with his grooming.

Well the groomer trimmed his whiskers very short. I was just wondering if this is normal? I know with cats you don't wanna cut their whiskers, is it the same with dogs?

They use whiskers to help them see where they are going so it's not the best idea to cut them but some groomers do for fashion reasons (usually for show dogs).

I remember reading about a blind dog who always got around fine until one day when he started crashing into things. They had just taken him to the groomer and turns out it was because she cut his whiskers!

I'm sure your dog will be fine but it's a good idea to ask them not to cut the whiskers in the future .

Thanks!

I figured it might be the same why with dogs like cats.

I will be telling the goomer not to any more.

good morning,
I'm a first time puppy Mommy also. I groom my furbaby myself & I have clipped his whiskers when I trim his "moustache" area. He behaves fine, has great balance & eyesight. His whiskers are about 2" long. I use scissors rather than an electric clipper so next time I trim him, I'll ask someone to hold his little whiskers out of the way so they can grow. Thanks for bringing up the subject. I had wondered about it myself.
