Seeking medical advice

Hi all...
Seeking a little medical advice - maybe someone out there has had this happen also.

I have an older Pug (12) and for 4 months now - right after a really bad upper resipitory infection (which we cleared up with antibiotics) he started drinking masses amounts of water and is unable to hold his bladder all day - or all night anymore. I mean this came on immediately after the infection cleared up. He isn't in any pain (not that I've noticed anyway). I've started taking the water bowl off the floor during the night but can't do that during the day since we have two other dogs that stay in the same area with him while we're at work. So I have wet papers to pick up in the evening when I get home.

Any ideas besides the obvious onset of kidney failure or diabetes?

Thanks for any input you can offer... I really don't know where to turn since the vet says if he isn't in any pain - and I can put up with cleaning the bathroom floor every day - he should be ok.

Armadilo,
I'm sorry it's taken so long to get back to you on your post. I had it moved to the Dog section so that maybe someone who has shared a similar experience can offer you some insight.

The only thing I can suggest to you is a trip to the Vet to find out what is going on. It would ease your mind to get to the root of it and I'm sure your dog will get the expert help he needs.

It must be very frustrating to deal with, poor guy

I wish you luck - please keep us posted on how he's doing?

We're not allowed to give out medical advice, only opinions and personal experiances. I too would suggest a vet trip. I don't know what the cause is, but since it came on so suddenly it seems to me there is a medical issue involved. If your vet won't see an animal unless it is in pain maybe you could find another vet? Have you already ruled out kidney failure and diabetes? As you said, those are the first obvious answers that come to mind. Good luck and do keep us updated!

Hi Armadilo,
I am sorry to hear your about your little guy. I agree with Deja and Becki, I think maybe a vet trip would be the only sure way to know anything. I had a situation with my papillon Jasmine, where at a time they thought she had a kidney issue. Thankfully, after a battery of tests, all turned out normal, her BUN levels were normal and after a trip to the specialist, her actual diagnosis was a food allergy. After reading your story, it sounds like it is possible something kidney related could be going on. Has there been any blood in his urine? Any other signs? There is another disease someone here on PT told me about awhile back, when I was asking for advice about Jazzy, and I asked my vet about it, (and it wasn't something she has) but some of the main symptoms are excessive drinking and urination. It is called Cushing's disease. I don't know if this could be something to check with your vet about. I would definately make an appt. as soon as possible. It definately sounds like something serious going on.
Please keep us updated and I hope your little guy feels better. My thoughts are with you.

Go to the vet and ask them what the other members pointed out. Also ask about a bladder infection.

Yes, bladder infection needs to be ruled out. Before you go to the vet, try to catch a urine sample, (better to catch it midstream than from the floor)they can dip it and check for blood.

Yeah, my first reaction would be a bladder infection, too. I used to have a Basset Hound who would do the same thing with a bladder infection.
