Thanks guys We took her back into the vet this afternoon and they ran some bloodwork. The only abnormality was an elevated liver enzyme of some kind (I don't remember what she said it was) but she said she's not worried. And another count was just a little off but she said it was likely due to the stress.
I'm not sure I trust the vet's opinion on this. She basically chalked it up to "an upset tummy" and gave her stuff for heartburn/indigestion. Now I'm no vet but my parents were convinced she was actively dying when they brought her in...that doesn't quite sound like an upset stomach to me. Thankfully, she has improved greatly since my last update! When we came to pick her up after her blood work, you could hear her mournful howling from the parking lot Poor thing was so scared. She's home now and acting pretty much like normal. She's peed and had a bit of food/water. I'm sooo relieved...
I've been going crazy thinking of what she could have gotten into. There are no mushrooms in this area and none of the grass is treated. I suppose she could have eaten a sketchy bug or something. When she's outside, she's always supervised so I don't think it's something that came from outside. The only thing I can think of inside is the onion soup but it was SO little. None of the houseplants are poisonous to animals. I just don't know Whatever it was, it seems to be out of her system now. I can't believe a dog could be THAT sick and improve so quickly...

Also, just to perk the thread up a little...here's the little girl after her ordeal today.

Getting a well-deserved skritch. (Haha, check out those ears)

I'm glad she's feeling better! she's such a doll My own doggy seems to get little tummy bugs all the time. No symptoms or anything he'll just be walking along and all of the sudden throw up. with no warning or anything. Sometimes dog's tummies can be just a little funky. (Although from your description it sounds like she probably got into something)

She seems a bit old for a liver shunt to be showing up now (usually shows up around 7 or 8 weeks or so)- but the symptoms sound like it. The going completely down, then improving .... if she does okay for a while than goes down again the same way, that'd be something to have her checked for.
She's sure a cutie-patootie !

The elevated liver enzymes are consistent with a toxicity, especially mushrooms or mold (like from spoiled food). They also fit with the acting dopey. Mushrooms can pop up overnight and not be noticeable, so I wouldn't completely rule that out.
Veterinary Information - Toxins that Affect Dogs
Hopefully whatever it was is a mild case, though I would insist that the liver values be rechecked in a few days if she were mine.

Oh, she's definitely getting a follow up check. Thanks for the information!
She's still doing awesome. Fingers crossed that there are no lasting effects but for now, everything seems much better. I'm still not convinced that she just had an upset stomach, which is kind of nagging at my mind though.

Maybe you should get a second opinion at another vet,if you don't fully trust what your vet is saying.
I am glad she is doing better tho.
And look at those ears!!!

When Sprout went through bout of severe illness they went through possibilities of toxins and liver shunts (and a few other things, like viral infection) saying all would cause elevated liver enzymes. After a few days of hospitalization Sprout was fine, and we never figured out what caused her problems (ultrasound revealed no shunts). We monitored enzymes for months afterward though. They said that if there was some type of gastro-intestinal injury (even cellular injury due to vomiting) ALT can remain increased for quite some time because it's produced in more than just the liver.
I hope your pup is feeling better real soon!
