So Careless!!
I cannot believe I allowed this to happen. I always look down on those who do not spay/neuter their animals and I hate it when people are too naive to think backyard breeding is acceptable. Ugh. I feel worthless. Jasmine, my miniature dachshund just went into her first cycle a few weeks ago. We have been meaning to get her fixed but decided after her first period, we would get it done to avoid any unwanted puppies in this unfriendly world. Well I let her outside and living in the woods with barely any neighbors to bother or cars to run in front of we don't put the dogs in the fence. Everything was normal and her period finally stopped (seemed like forever!) As I was giving her a bath outside, I was scrubbing her tummy clean and felt what seemed like a small cyst or lipoma or something. I yelled to Kevin to remind me (for those of you that do not know, I'm very forgetful) to tell him what I found on Jasmine after bathing all of the dogs.
After everyone was bathed, we sat down on the porch while she was eating (that's the only time she stops wiggling!) and found swollen teats. She is pregnant. I don't know WHO got her and I have no clue when it was. I've heard that once their little teats get milk in them, the pups are soon to come. I have nothing planned, no vet appt. booked, nothing. I don't even know how far along she is and I'm praying that the dog that found her was a small dog.
I'm not sure why I'm posting this-- Maybe for some acceptance and advice but I understand if everyone is mad... Just amuse me- I'm going nuts!

Aw don't feel bad, we all make mistakes Sometimes things just happen and there isn't anything we can do about it. Is there any way you could find the puppies nice homes once they are born?

oh wow...thats hard thing to deal with...I am not mad at you, things happen...but I do hope you get her to a vet ASAP especially since you don't know the dad or the time of the incident...it is really important to take her in...when I was 11 my dog got pregnant by a cockerspaniel ( I had a toy poodle) and we took her to the vet often to insure her health (**** dog dug under our apartment fence) luckily there was only 4 puppies and they were all small except 1, but with the vet on call she had all on her own...it was scarey and I made sure she was fixed right after and ever since then every dog I have ever had I have gotten fixed right away...I wish you and the doggy lotsa luck and I am wishing and hoping for a good outcome for you

You seem like a very responsible, loving dog owner. These puppies are very lucky to be born into a home where the owner cares about their future well being. I'm sure you'll do everything you can to make sure they get loving homes and don't end up a tragic statistic, and that's the important thing. Please keep us posted on how things go.

Thanks for the support. I am feeling better about it. I'm worried though because I havn't felt any movement in there. I read that once the teats begin to fill, there could be anywhere from about 2 weeks until birth or just hours from birth. Am I wrong? Maybe she's having a false pregnancy-- I've also heard about that.. Doubt it though. Her appetite has climbed to a peak! I do need to get her into a vet. I will keep everyone poasted.. She's doing good so far!
Question-- how come she is so far along but has not calmed down AT ALL? Shouldn't she be sleeping more and have become less hyper? She's still as wild as always.

accidents happen... though I'm sure afterwards you'll be getting her in for a fix pretty quick. UPdate us, I hope for the best for you and your dog.
I agree that these pups are lucky to be at least coming into th world with a responsible perosn whose going to see they go to good homes at least.

You didn't notice her gaining weight or filling out at all? First thing I would do is take her to the vet, get a ultrasound done to make sure the pups are alive and not huge. They vet can help you with a due date. Then, go shopping...do a search on everything you need for a litter of puppies. I would also start feeding mom a HIGH QUALITY puppy food formula, this will give her a extra boost, and also help her milk come in better...good luck

I noticed her putting on a little weight but it wasn't nearly enough for her to be pregnant so I thought she was just growing/filling out. She is still young (1 year)...
I did look online and see what I needed. We went to Wal-Mart and bought a few things for her to prepare for the birth... I'm just waiting on her to calm down and give me a sign that she's getting close. HappyDancer kinda ruined that one for me
I just looked at the Born To Die website on Riddick's sig.

Well, I hope all goes well with her.
One of my dogs had a false pregnancy. You would have thought she was pregnant. Heh.
