UPDATE

I called my regular vet and asked if he would do a housecall to check if I completely took the tick off of the dog. He said he would but that it would be better if I just put some flea and tick spray. Luckily the one he told me to put on her was the one I bought. He said that if I didn't take the whole tick off that it would come off with that. I decided to take her a bath first since she hasn't had one in a while and she's an outside dog. Well, when I was taking her a bath I noticed that she also had fleas. I bathed her with the flea and tick shampoo so I'm sure I killed some off. Actually, I know I did since I took like more than 5 off of her. Most of them where dead. I guess the shampoo was working. I'm going to wait till tomorrow to put the spray on her since I wanted her to completely dry. It was so cute after the bath though. She was so happy to be clean that she got really hyper. She was running around everywhere. We gave her a biscuit and she would drop it on the floor and run back and forth to it trying to get it with her mouth as she was running. I'll probably repeat the bath in 2 weeks like the bottle said to do.

Well, I do have pics. They're not from the bath though. I have to have someone holding her while I bathe her so I can't find anyone that can take a picture. These were taken with my camera phone so they might not be that good of quality.

This is her biting my boyfriend cause she doesn't like him because he leaves a tick and fleas on her...just kidding. She doesn't really bite...she just places her teeth on him or me. I don't let her do it to me though because I don't think it's a good training technique since she tries to do it to everyone.

This is her close up

I've had really good luck with Advantage. It took all the fleas off. That's what they put on Sky when she went to the shelter and she had A LOT of fleas on her and she was clean when I adopted her. I don't know about ticks though but I think if it works that well on fleas then it should work well on ticks.

Hello-We use frontline product to get rid of ticks! it seems to work on our dog. It depends on where you live in the country if your going to see ticks or not.. good luck!

Ahhhh!!!! Ticks!!! I Hate Ticks!!!!

I'm a dog groomer and I've been finding a lot of ticks on dogs lately. I can handle fleas, but when it comes to ticks, I can't stand them!

Here's my take on the whole flea/tick treatments that are available.

Flea/Tick Collars don't work very well. I wouldn't waste my money. They just keep fleas and ticks away from the neck. Also if you have small children in the house and they touch the collar and put their fingers in their mouths, it can be harmful to them. Not to mention if you have another dog who licks the flea collar on the other dog like mine use to.

Flea and tick preventatives that you can get over the counter at Walmart, Petsmart, Petco, etc. are harmful to your pet! They work by going through the bloodstream. When I worked at the vet, we had about four dogs come in poisoned from over the counter flea preventatives.

Flea and tick preventatives that you can get from the vet (Frontline Plus-make sure it's frontline PLUS- Advantix, Revolution, etc.) is your best bet. It works through the oil glands in the skin as opposed to the bloodstream. That's why it's important to apply it two days before or two days after you bathe them.

Flea Shampoos work well. I like Adams for older dogs (get it at Petsmart or your vet) and Mycodex for younger dogs and cats (get it at your vet). There's also this shampoo that we use at my work called Limonine or something like that. We get it from www.ryanpets.com. It's made by Desert Suds. It's good b/c it doesn't dry them out as bad as other flea and tick shampoos. Desert Suds makes a whole line of shampoos for different needs and they are all great.

With any preventative make sure your dog is old enough for it. I think most have to be used after 12 weeks of age. If you are confused, ask your vet.

Another thing to keep in mind is if the dog (or cat) is an indoor dog (or cat) then you need to understand that if they have a bunch of fleas, your house has a bunch of fleas. No matter how much you shampoo them and medicate them, it's not going to matter unless you deflea the house. I recommend finding a groomer, taking them to the groomer for a flea bath (NOT A FLEA DIP! THEY ARE HARMFUL TO THE PET!) and while your pet is at the groomer, deflea your car and your house. Then two days later apply a preventative from the vet.

There's something called Seven Dust that you can get from Lowes, Home Depot, etc. You sprinkle it around your yard and it kills all kinds of bugs including fleas and ticks. I recommend it.

You also shouldn't EVER bathe a dog more than once a month. Bathe cats even less if possible. It dries them out and WILL lead to skin problems. The only time a dog SHOULD be bathed more than once a month is if they have mange or something that needs to be treated more often.

I hope this helps.

I forgot to tell mm simb that I think it's great she's helping her boyfriend's dog out like that... No offense, but they don't have any business owning animals of any kind.

Thanks to both of you. I know they shouldn't have any animals. It's basically his sister bringing in the dogs. They had her then she went to his cousin's house and then they got a puppy. Five days later the puppy died of parvo because their yard was infected and they thought that went away after a while. Of course, if you have the dogs burried in the yard that infection will never go away. The sister didn't listen and they never told me they've had dogs with parvo because I know if they would've told me I wouldn't have even hesitated to take the puppy home with me. Then Daisy came back and they don't really take care of her. All they do is feed her. I barely convinced my boyfriend to make her a dog house after like a year.
I actually bought the stuff from Hartz but I wont use it if it's going to harm her. I did give her a bath to get rid of the fleas she had on her and it helped a lot. I also sprayed her with the Adams stuff.
What someone without a job can do to a dog that's not even theirs...

I got some stuff from the pet store and it has made their coats all greasy so I am going to wash them all and get more Frontline.
Also the stuff did not work as I found a huge one on Sonnys neck and the surrounding area was bloody. It was a right mess.
How I hate those things...
