I'm a dog groomer and I've been finding a lot of ticks on dogs lately. I can handle fleas, but when it comes to ticks, I can't stand them!
Here's my take on the whole flea/tick treatments that are available.
Flea/Tick Collars don't work very well. I wouldn't waste my money. They just keep fleas and ticks away from the neck. Also if you have small children in the house and they touch the collar and put their fingers in their mouths, it can be harmful to them. Not to mention if you have another dog who licks the flea collar on the other dog like mine use to.
Flea and tick preventatives that you can get over the counter at Walmart, Petsmart, Petco, etc. are harmful to your pet! They work by going through the bloodstream. When I worked at the vet, we had about four dogs come in poisoned from over the counter flea preventatives.
Flea and tick preventatives that you can get from the vet (Frontline Plus-make sure it's frontline
PLUS- Advantix, Revolution, etc.) is your best bet. It works through the oil glands in the skin as opposed to the bloodstream. That's why it's important to apply it two days before or two days after you bathe them.
Flea Shampoos work well. I like Adams for older dogs (get it at Petsmart or your vet) and Mycodex for younger dogs and cats (get it at your vet). There's also this shampoo that we use at my work called Limonine or something like that. We get it from
www.ryanpets.com. It's made by Desert Suds. It's good b/c it doesn't dry them out as bad as other flea and tick shampoos. Desert Suds makes a whole line of shampoos for different needs and they are all great.
With any preventative make sure your dog is old enough for it. I think most have to be used after 12 weeks of age. If you are confused, ask your vet.
Another thing to keep in mind is if the dog (or cat) is an indoor dog (or cat) then you need to understand that if they have a bunch of fleas, your house has a bunch of fleas. No matter how much you shampoo them and medicate them, it's not going to matter unless you deflea the house. I recommend finding a groomer, taking them to the groomer for a flea bath (NOT A FLEA DIP! THEY ARE HARMFUL TO THE PET!) and while your pet is at the groomer, deflea your car and your house. Then two days later apply a preventative from the vet.
There's something called Seven Dust that you can get from Lowes, Home Depot, etc. You sprinkle it around your yard and it kills all kinds of bugs including fleas and ticks. I recommend it.
You also shouldn't EVER bathe a dog more than once a month. Bathe cats even less if possible. It dries them out and WILL lead to skin problems. The only time a dog SHOULD be bathed more than once a month is if they have mange or something that needs to be treated more often.
I hope this helps.
