Trouble w/ housebreaking

Hi. I have a shih Tzu who is 41/2 months old. I got him Aug 31st and he is just NOW crate trained. The problem is I can't seem to get thru to him that he needs to potty outside when not in the crate. I have never had this problem w/ my other dogs so I'm not sure how to approach it. I am getting another shih tzu around Christmas and I really want this one housebroke by then!
Thanks,
Heidi

well u could try this, when ever he trys to go to the bathroom inside clap your hands and then carry him outside and leave him out the for 15 min. after a while he won't like it and stop. It worked for me.
