We found a puppy Malteser

My mom came this evening all shaken up and told me that she saw a little abandoned Malteser in a box near the street. She tried to take him in her arms (to take him home) but he bit her twice. We sat in the car and got back to the place she saw the pup. I took a flashlight with me cause it was dark already. The puppy seamed injured...both of his back feet don’t have hair from the hock down to the paw just row skin, there are also hairless spots on other parts of his body and he can’t stand on his back feet (although later I saw him get up and stand on one). I thought that he might have been hit by a car or something and we decided that we can’t just leave him there. As we took a plastic dog container with us, we managed to put him inside somehow and bring him to our home.

Mom called the Vet immediately and he came to examine the dog within an hour. What he told us shocked me even more. The puppy was not hit by a car - that is a good news...and the bad news is that he was nearly frozen to death. All that hairless places on his body are actually frostbitten places. It seams that the puppy was lost days ago and we had an extremely cold weather these days...down to minus 12 below zero. Apart from that he also has a pneumonia. The Vet really did the best he could...he gave him infusion and some additional shots and said he’ll come back in two days. I have no idea why so late...why not tomorrow. He also told us how to take care for that frozen places twice daily...and apart from that I guess all we can do is wait and see if the pup will pull through. Puppy is around five months old...and scared to death - pore little one I just hope he won’t die [sigh]. I’ll post if there are any changes.

He is doing a little better now but he still looks terrible. His whold body is covered up with wounds, especially the legs. He still can not stand on his back legs and we fear what will we do if he stays crippled for life. Apart from that he is also eating very porely. We tried the meat (beef, chicken...) but he still do not want to chew...he just drinks some milk and soup...but that is not enough and I think he is loosing weight. He alsready got two infusions so far. We are really donng the best we can. The Vet is still holding back with prognosis...I dunno...we'll see...

Apart from that my Chihuahua male Billy got poisoned two days ago. he ate something outside. Luckily he didn't died. We reacted on time - made him vomit and the Vet gave him some stuff...so he is okay now...HUH...

He is getiing a lot worse now. I am begining to think that we are not actually doing this dog a favor by keeping him alive. I am giving him antybiotic shots at the advice of a Vet twice daily. He still have the appetite and is eating fine but those wounds look terribly - you don't wanna know. My dad was right when he told me that I could never be a Vet...my stomach just can't handle this. Pore little puppy...

Just in case you want to know how this sad story ended...

In the night between Sunday and Monday we hardly slept because he was crying from time to time...so firt thing in Monday we took him to the main Vetrinary clinic here in town to hear an opinion of his condition from another Vet. The Vets out there were really shocked when they saw the pup. They said that he is in a very bad condition - he probably frozed too much...and the skin was literally falling of from many places on his body. The Vet also said that there is really no hope that he will ever recover and that we shouldnt torture the dog or orurselves no more. He would die for sure in few more days but he would only suffer more. ...so we agreed to put the dog to sleep - pore llittle one. This battle we lost...

What a sad story about the little Maltese puppy .. But you certainly gave him a few more days of love and care than he would have gotten, had you not found him ... At least his short little life has been made known to many people and that in itself is something that would not have happened, if you didn't share your story ...

You were his guardian angel ....
