What kind of dog should I put in my story?

I am going to write a story about a girl who fosters a shelter dog who has had a hard life and falls in love with him/decides to adopt him.

I need to decide what kind of dog it will be so that I can name him and get started. Obviously, I have a preference for corgi mix, and aussies are beautiful and would be easy to fall in love with, but I'm not sure that they represent the typical shelter dog in need of a loving home as well as a lab mix or german shepherd mix would. I'm going to post this here, and at another forum I post at, and go with the majority.

So please, vote, what kind of dog should he be?

After seeing a shepherd come in with a gunshot wound: "You know we pretty much just paid for Ein all over again." (Pats him on the head.) "I'd do it again if he needed us to."

Lesson: Remember to take time to think about what's truly important. Oh, and give your pets a hug.

Yah, I think the "muttier" the dog, the better. This is a kids' story, right? I would make him a "big, scruffy, fuzzy dog".

I voted for the aussie mix since they tend to be an active dog and I would think they would end up in shelters. Although I do love corgi's.
I could send you a picture of our nieghborhood stray. She is so adorable because she is just a dog. Only problem is I am not sure I have any pics at home. I think they are all at work.
