What to expect when bringing a puppy home

I have yet to buy the books I need for puppy ownership so I thought I would ask a few questions. What should I expect if I bring a puppy home? Should I allow the puppy to sleep in my bedroom (not on the bed) and have him or her sleep in a crate with the crate door open so the puppy can see me? I also heard a timer soothes a puppy. I am hoping I won't be working if we do adopt but if I am, I have to adjust my schedule. Can a puppy be left alone for a few hours or does it need to have someone home on a constant basis until it is an adult? I have a feeling if we do adopt a puppy, I will be carrying it around in one of those baby sacks (you know the ones where the baby is always on the stomach).

I know these questions must seem very simple to most of you but remember I have never owned a dog in my life.

Lots of accidents and expect the unexpected! (sorry couldn't help myself) All you really need is lots of love and patience and you will do just fine. Just remember the puppy will not come with its own instructions and you just have research and then adjust what you have learned to your own puppy and what works best for him/her. I'm sure you will do just fine and you will have the perfect puppy in a matter of days!

I think it's awesome how much you are researching and planning. If only everyone were like you. There would be no more homeless or unwanted puppies.

I'm with Dena. That, and expect to be outside more than you have been in the last month in the first week. That pup will have to go and often.

Keep us updated, Denise!
