White Boxer
I have a white boxer with Demodex (sp?) mange. I've been to three different vets and they all say something different. I looked it up on the web, and everything says something different as well. I was wondering if anyone knows what exactly I can do to help him out.

When we first bought him the breeder told us that he might be deaf. We bought him anyways, he was completely dirty so we took him home and gave him a bath. We then found out he had fleas so we seperated him from our other dog and while I was holding him I discovered why she though he was "deaf". He had a horrible ear mite problem. The next day we took him to the vet, they treated his ear mites and fleas and told us the bald patches might just be from the fleas and it would probably go away on its own.
Anyways, it didn't go away so we took him back and they diagnosed him with demodex mange (a genetic form of mange that is not contagious). They proceeded to tell us that he needed to have mitaban dips every other week. So we took him for about a month and a half to have his dips. He didn't seem to be getting better, so a friend of our refered us to a different vet.
Vet 2 told us Mitaban dips were extremely toxic and was definately not the way to go. So they he went on Ivomectin given orally. That ended up working really well and his coat came back beautifully and the vet said that he didn't need the ivomectin anymore. Well, he ended up loosing his hair AGAIN. I continued to buy Ivomectin, but it didn't have to same effect as before.
Vet 3 we went to cause he was closer and our dog needed to be neutered. So, I asked him about his suggestions to control the mange. He told me that he uses Ivomectin as a last resort along with the mitaban dips. He said that they are toxic, but whenever you eat an apple, you eat mitaban. He also told me that demodex mange will go away, and neutering is one way to help it go away.
So, he was neutered last friday and I really hope it goes away, because he looks so beautiful with his full coat of hair. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any different treatments other than mitaban dips and ivomectin?

My RB Corey had demodex mange when he was a puppy. That was many years ago and the treatment may be different now. I gave him baths with the medication the vet gave me and after a few months it was gone, he never had problems with it again. Ajax is cute, I hope you can get him all better soon.

My experience with this type of mange is that ivermectin alone rarely works. Mostly for a cure we've had to resort to the dips. I'm so sorry it didn't work for you. So far we've had a 100% success rate with mitaban dips and interceptor once a day for several weeks.

. All I know is that this treatment was recommended by a dog dermatologist. Off label many veterinarians use it this way because it has been proven to be very effective in tough cases. When you are desperate and the choice is euthanasia you have to do what you have to. Interceptor is an instant kill just like heartguard. Many people think they give the monthly heartworm protection and it works all month. This is NOT true. You give it, it works in 24 hours and you are done until the next month.

I want to add also that I've seen ivermectin work for sarcoptic mange but rarely for demodex. Usually the dips are the only thing effective. We are getting more dogs from down south that are coming up with this this type of mange and the dips saved their life. You have to understand that some animals with demodex are MISERABLE and although none of the treatments are safe, you have to consider the alternative.
Here's a helpful page on mange:
http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body...tic_mange.html
Interceptor use is discussed further down the page.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info CTChin, the expense would be why my vet wouldn't go the interceptor route. Owners around here would not pay that kind of money for months worth of treatments. Although I would have to say that I've never heard of the monthly heartworm preventitives only lasting 24 hours...that's a new one for me. Do you have any links that supports that claim? I'm not doubting you, just interested. Thanks

Yeah, thankfully my boss gives discounts on bulk interceptor!
Actually I heard this information about heartguard straight from the mouth of the sales rep from merial. I'll see if I can find anything online.
If you still work for a vet, make sure to bring a merial representative in for a meeting about the products. They give away free frontline and heartguard to employees.

Yup, still work for the vet, but our Merial rep doesn't bring in anything Our Revolution rep on the other hand calls us ahead of time to ask what sizes and types of Revolution all our employees need. She's awsome and calls and comes in every 6 months like clockwork We don't have a tick problem around here, so Revolution works really well for us. I'll ask her about the heartworm prevention in Revolution as well. I know it works on mites, mange and scabies, but I don't think there is anything about demodex in the paperwork. When Mitaban dips don't quite do the job with Demodex, the ivermectin usually gives it enough umph to kick it
