Why Dogs Can't Eat Chocolate?

The worst a Hershey bar can do to you is add an inch to your hips. But that same candy – even in relatively small amounts – can make a dog or cat very sick. Make no mistake: For them, chocolate is poison.

In addition to a high fat content, chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, two different types of stimulants that affect the central nervous system and the heart muscle, as well as increasing the frequency of urination.

Day before yesterday my husband put a very chocolaty brownie too close to the edge of table. My 90 pound golden ate it, I worried so much. i watched him like a hawk for any signs of sickness- The only thing he did was burp, I guess he was fine, thank goodness my husband only had 1 little brownie , but I yelled at him any way because he keeps leaving food on the edge of table and walking away from it.

My 12 lb pom ate almost a whole bag of semi-sweet chocolates one night. I came home and there were wrappers everywhere. He was really hyper at first, then he started with the diarraha and he began wobbling over and falling and stuff. It was the scariest thing EVER. I really thought my baby was gonna die that night. We took him to the 24hr emergency vet and when they saw him, they snatched him up immediately and they gave him charcoal and pumped his stomach. He was fine after a couple of days. The vet said we were extremely lucky we got there when we did.

My car was definately a disgusting mess after that though.

I had a mini poodle years ago and he got into the christmas candy on the table I think it was little reeses cups?! Anyhow, he too tore the wrap offs and ate them all! I am not sure how many were in there but he slept alot and then he woke up and he too was wobbly and couldn't hold himself up. It was very scary luckily he came out ok!

Cool

Remember, too, that some "chocolate" goodies have more actual chocolate in them than others. A brownie, for instance (while good for fulfilling a chocolate craving in us) contains little actual chocolate. It's the baking chocolate and those kinds that are the more dangerous.

Hmmmm, think I'll go have some M&M's!!
