Zymox Otic for ear infections

I know some of us have dogs that get ear infections on a regular basis and I wanted to share a medicine that has worked wonders for Molly's ears. Molly had a horrible ear infection when we adopted her. The vet gave her antibiotics and oral steroids (I didn't know any better at the time and gave them to her) and her ear infection cleared up. Lo and behold a couple months later she got another ear infection. I had my friend's ex-girlfriend, who is a vet tech, come over to look at Molly's ears to make sure her ear drums were not ruptured and she told me not to give Molly any more antibiotics and definitely not give her oral steroids. She highly recommended Zymox Otic with hydrocortisone which I happened to have in the house because I ordered it online. She told me to put the Zymox drops in her ears for 14 days straight and use the Zymox ear cleaner in conjunction with the drops. It has been two months later and her ears look incredible. The swelling is gone and ear wax and yeast production are down. If anyone is curious, you can find Zymox Otic on Amazon.com and there are reviews for it. I can't say enough good things about this medication and best of all, it doesn't require a prescription and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I refuse to give Molly antibiotics on a regular basis and steroids are absolutely out of the question considering she has allergies and the steroids will only weaken her immune system. Zymox Otic uses enzymes to combat the ear infection which makes it a heck of a lot safer than meds.

If you're against the steroids, you may want to get the Zymox without hydrocortisone, seeing as how it is a steroid.

For anyone weird like me who wants to know, here's the technical info on how the enzymes work:

I just posted in my "Sick of giving meds" thread about Zymox Otic!

I got one bottle with hydrocortisone and one without. So far so good!

By making the statement that you wont put your dog on Steroids your contradicting your self by saying that you use Zymox with Hydrocortisone. That is in fact a Steroid. Also with Zymox you shouldnt use it on a regular basis unless you check improvment of the ear infections every 3-4 months. Bacteria build up a tolerance to medications so rotating the use of your dogs ear antibiotics is in fact a good thing. You just need to find what works and rotate them, and clean your dogs ears out often with a medicated ear cleaner from your veterinarian such as Epi-otic.

Rhonda, thanks.

Yes, hydrocortisone is a steroid but considering it is in liquid form and administered in the ears, it has fewer side affects than an oral steroid.

And, if you go on the website for Zymox Otic, it clearly states this medication has no memory so the animal does not build up an immunity to it.

Furthermore, there are plenty of ear cleaners you can buy online that don't have to come directly from a vet. The Zymox ear cleaner does a great job at cleaning ears and is not harsh like medicated ear cleaners.
