Bad News for Turtles

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has just
released some alarming information about the kinds of contamination
found in some species of sea turtles during autopsies. The agency, in a report released to media, says that up to one third of the dead baby turtles it has inspected in recent months had tar, plastic or both in their systems.
It would appear that young turtles are eating the tar that has washed
up on beaches and are fouling their digestive systems. The material
prevents them from digesting food and they starve to death.

Many of the dead animals have been found in Brevard County. Some
environmentalists say the oil and tar in the waters has been dumped by passing boats, contrary to maritime ordinances.
