Box turtles male thing sticks out & UVA light

Hi. Hope I am doing this right, and I hope I get some responses to my questions. Does anyone know if a ESU Repile Bright Light Spot full-specturm daylight heat lamp supply adequate UVA light for a terrarium? The box says UVA wavelength range from 315nm to 400nm. Next questions: Is the double spade shaped thing that my 6 yr old male box turtle likes to stick out of his tail in the water his penis or some dreadful disease? He seems healthy, but that thing is weird looking! I have read something about this, but not enough to know for sure. No mention of it in my turtle books, oddly enough! Thanks,Janet

That light should provide adequate UVA but so will a regular household bulb. You really don't need to buy special basking light bulbs. It is important to keep in mind that no bulb like that is going to have UVB which is also required. You will need a separate UVB fixture.

Oh, and, yes, you are right about your box turtle. Shocks a lot of people that way.
