Can you identify this little guy?

Can anyone identify this little guy? I found him in the grass the morning after a hard rainy night. There's a pond about a 1500 ft from my house. (I'm in the foothills of NC)

He has 5 toes, doesn't have a hinged shell, has 3 ridges/bumps on top of his shell and is about the size of a 50 cent piece. He has a slight pond smell.

He almost looks like a Bog Turtle but he appears to be lacking the bright yellow markings on the side of the neck. If it is a bog.... DO NOT KEEP IT...they are illegal to capture in your area.

I'm really not sure what he is..each time I try to settle on a name for him there's a feature he has that they shouldn't or one that he should have that he doesn't lol.

You may want to try asking over on TurtleTimes.com They've got some "Turtle Experts" over there that would likely be able to tell you what he is rather quickly

I don't plan on keeping him. I was just wondering what he is. I have enough kids at this house to keep me busy as it is.

We thought it may have been a bog also but the yellow on the neck isn't there and from what I've found on bog hatchlings they have the yellow on the neck. Hmmmm....

I posted on a turtle board before I posted here but I thought maybe Elfomatic or Lizgirl would know what he/she is....

He/she is a darling turtle though, eh??

He's gorgeous that's for sure... looks quite healthy!

I'll be anxious to hear what the final decision is on his type...

Bogs and Spotteds have been known to cross breed but he's missing spots as well lol Lil'Stinker is trying to trick us!

That's actually a hatchling Eastern Box Turtle. What a find! They used to be quite common in the Carolinas but now they are nearing endangerment. That little guy is probably less than a month old. Its great to see that they are still reproducing somewhere ...

If you want to see more pics of ones like him you can look here: http://www.chelonia.org/TcarolinamajorDawn3.jpg

BTW, in case you are wondering about the hinge issue ... the hinge on the plastron does not close the shell as it does in adult box turtles. It will not be moveable until the hatchling is about 2 inches long.

Hopefully you released him right back right where you found him? Box turtles have a peculiar homing instinct and researchers that have tried to reintroduce them to areas in the wild have found a pretty much 100% fatality rate for animals released away from their home range. Thats the unfortunate thing about doing box turtle rehab, people pick them up off the highway somewhere and turn them in to wildlife rescue and theres nothing they can do except keep them unless they know exactly where it was picked up.
