The Pseudemys genus has undergone a lot of changes, and to my knowledge, mobiliensis isn't a valid subspecies anymore... but anyway, the Florida River Cooter, which is now Pseudemys concinna floridana is pretty common in the pet trade, and frequently mistaken for sliders or painted turtles - especially when young. They get as large, if not larger, than sliders at adult size. They have pretty much the exact same care needs as a slider, so it's unlikely he'll be harmed by a pet store that doesn't know exactly what species he is - assuming they know how to properly care for water turtles in the first place.
