Russian Tortoise

Well, I think I am finally getting a Russian Tortoise! I have wanted to get one for over a year now. I just haven't found any locally other than at Petsmart, which is not a good place to get one. Poor petsmart turtles are wild caught and come with tons of problems. Not to mention, I don't want to support Petstores, for many reasons.

Here are the pictures. I am not sure which one I will be getting yet. They are about an hour and half away. I need to get a habitat all set up also. Not to mention talking it over with Brian tonight. He has know ive wanted one forever.

Arn't they just adorable? I wasn't planning on a baby, but I would like to see it grow.

Russians are great, you'll love it.

However, be very vigilant with a turtle that young. They can be very "fragile". The food, water and environment have to be pretty well maintained or they can go downhill pretty rapidly.

You want to be VERY good with the diet. Supplying a proper diet is the most difficult thing about the ownership of a tortoise. Tortoises are killed more often with a poor diet than any other cause. Do tons of research, then do more. Don't take any one source at face value. Get to know the Ca/Ph ratio of every food you might offer.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone.

Thanks Bob - They are around 5 months old now. Im not sure how old they are in that picture. Do you think that I should get two instead of one? I have read that they don't have to have company. But I hate animals living along, lol.

I had two for years, but they don't need company.

They have a lot of personality, I'd probably still have them, but I found someone who loved them even more than I did, so I let her have them. They are still going strong.

Another thing to be aware of is to make sure they are NEVER alone with a dog, rat, etc. Many animals will injure or kill tortoises. Even if you have the most mild mannered pet, they can not be trusted with your tortoise. I've gotten quite a few rehab turtles and tortoises that were injured by dogs and rodents.

Again, let me emphasize diet, diet, diet. You don't want to start seeing "pyramiding" on the tort's shell.
