what kind of turtle is this?

Hello out there!
I need help, my brother-in-law just rescued a box turtle yesterday and gave to us to care for. It came from a persons home who was put in jail. We have other exotic (unusual pets) so I guess, that made us prime canidates. I'm not sure what kind of box turtle it is, it looks like alot of pictures I've seen...each block on it's shell has somewhat of a light box design with vertical lines coming down from it. he has 5 toes, sooo its not a three toe. It doesn't look like an ornate. From all I've read, they are better off living outside in a natural envirement, but we live in Pennsylvania, so I'm not sure if it is too cold here. Right now, out of desperation he is in a 20 gallon aquarium.....it's all I got in such short notice.
He has a missing back foot and is not eating.
