what type of turtle is this.


Hi there, i hope someone can help me. i found a turtle in my backyard. being i live in nevada, this was quite a surprise. i was wondering if someone could identify it? he is about 3 inches long.

It looks like a sulcata tortoise. Where do you live?

It looks like one of your native desert tortoises Gopherus agassizii. I believe it is a state as well as a federally protected species. It is illegal for you to "touch, harm, harass or collect" a desert tortoise.

I'd let it go on it's way ASAP.

That's definately a Sulcata. I have 3 of these guys. They will get rather large. I'm not sure how he/she got in your back yard but it is a Sulcata. Google "Sulcata" and you can compare pics.
