suicidal salamander

my salamander, who i've had for a year now, appears to be acting very unusual. He basks in the sun (well uv light to be exact) and does this till he becomes alarmingly dry!! As soon as I see this I quickly submerge him and place him back on his rock so that he is at least half way submerged.

What is going on with him??

This is bad news. There is something wrong with the enclosure. I would take him out, trash all of the substrate and start over. He's telling you that the sun and dryness is better than whatever is under the rocks in there. JMO

i have done that, the water was changed and everything has been changed from scratch

at first i fig he wanted extra sunlight since his light has not been on for 2 weeks (so he could make vit. D) but with the way he's getting, he seems to like to want to try to dry up

and the water has been changed 3X!!
