Know of any friends and family members who may be planning a visit to an aquarium? Please tell them to first stop by Captivitystinks.org, a project of the Cetacean Freedom Network dedicated to putting an end to the abuse and captivity of marine mammals. The no-frills site contains solid information on the various species of whales and dolphins and the conditions they must suffer in captivity. There's also a comprehensive list of aquaria where dolphins and orcas perform and, says ASPCA Animal Watch magazine Editor Marion Lane, "Visitors are invited to click on the ones they have attended to learn about the many animals who have died there, some at tragically young ages."
The "How You Can Help" section is extensive and specific, and squeamish visitors are cautioned to skip the section on whale hunting. Adds Lane, "Captivitystinks.org makes it very clear that aquaria are in the entertainment business, not education."
