Doggie seatbelts
It should be a law to have your animal secured inside your vehicle.
I don't care how much i get flamed for this....
USE A HARNESS OF A CRATE ... I've seen far too many dogs with broken hips / lifetime paralisys... because owners felt it cruel to put a car harness on their dog....but instead let them roam around in the back seat, unsecured.... only to be flung through the window, or against the seats in an accident.
you can buy the harness at any petstore...and they're cheap, compared to surgery! Also, your dog WILL get used to the harness!

I agree (well maybe not the law part). Any time any of my dogs are transfered anywhere (showing, vet visit, ect) they are restrained (usually in a crate). With Pixie (my chihuahua) she has her own safety harness that attaches to the seat

I just told Ben about this issue (whats pointed out in the original post) and having a Great Dane, can you imagine what force the weight of a dog like that can have if thrown like a rag doll into the back your seat?!?
We're definately getting one. Thanks for bringing this up.
(BTW- Just a little FYI, even if a driver or a passenger sitting in front is wearing a seat buckle, in an accident they'd be killed by an unrestrained passenger in back sitting behind them.)

Ok well australia is on the way of making this a law, if it isn't already. I actually watched a documentary on this and it was proving how a large dog unrestrained can actually kill it's owner by bouncing off the dash and hitting the owner on the way back. My dogs have always had harnesses for the car but I tell you they went out of stock after that documentary for a while! I think it opened up everyone's eyes! So yeah Aussie land is seeing how important it is and is doing something about it!

Yup! Kali and Orion have their harnesses specifically made to attach to the seat belts...now they don't faceplant into the dashboard when we hit the breaks! They weren't thrilled with them at first, but have gotten used to them. Kali even hits the seatbelt release button herself when we get to our destination She figured that one out real quick...along with what button to step on to put the windows down...TG for window locks!

That's wonderful, I'm glad you're going to get one.
my neighbors a long time ago had a dauchand that was paralyzed from the front paws back... my father had to make him a little cart so he could pull himself around....
I saw a dog in PetsMart a few days ago, and the poor thing had a limp back leg...apparently, the couple was driving somewhere close, so they didn't crate the dog.... he fell out of the seat....broke his little leg.
we have to all remember that we have to take care of our fur babies....they need us to.

You forgot to mention the people that leave their dogs unrestrained that climb all over the place and CAUSE the accidents!

I've always allowed my dogs to "Remain seated" by their favorite back window without consideration of restraints...
<insert image of me slapping myself on the forhead and exclaiming a good solid DOH! in my best Homer Simpson voice>
I've never even looked at a dog harness for the car to even have a clue how they work.... I'll be heading off to do so now though because it just makes plain sense...
Any recommendations as far as which ones are the easiest/most comfortable to work with? I have all large dogs (akita/malamute mix... shepherd/lab mix..and a rottweiler) so crates wouldn't even fit in my backseat lol...
Thanks for the clue bat beating

those Teathers are WONDERFUL for little houdinis like my dog...
they just attach to a walking harness...
NEVER attach one to a dog collor though, a woman slammed on her brakes, and her dog got a broken neck.
