Dog breeder agrees to turn over 59 dogs
(Ithaca-AP) -- A Tompkins County dog breeder has agreed to turn
over 59 dogs to the county S-P-C-A, after investigators determined
that many were suffering in overcrowded conditions.
The dogs were recovered from Judy's Gems in Groton, 30 miles
south of Syracuse.
Tompkins County S-P-C-A Director Nathan Winograd says many had
rotten teeth, deformities, hernias and eye problems.
S-P-C-A officials have been working with the state Department of
Agriculture and Markets in its inspections of
pet shops and
breeding facilities.
The rescued dogs include terriers, Chihuahuas and Welsh corgis.
The North Shore Animal League -- a "no-kill" shelter -- drove
two trucks from Long Island to take 32 of the dogs.
