My dog was shot and killed by an off-duty officer

My dog was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer while walking in a Bedford, New Hampshire park. Toby was literally out of Chris' sight for 5 to 6 seconds when he heard the shots. Chris ran to Toby's aid and then watched in horror as the off-duty officer but a final bullet in my dog's head even as Chris yelled at him not to. Then he pointed his gun at Chris and told him to get down on the ground. If you would like to learn more or you would like to help send emails or letters to the powers that be, please go to http://www.fortobywithlove.com

Thank you.

I was horrified after reading the article concerning that monster of a "police officer"! Toby looked like such a sweet little guy! I'm not only outraged that he had the audacity to shoot a dog that clearly wasn't attacking anyone, but also for the fact that he shot the dog in such a public place as a park! What if one of the bullets had hit a child!? That officer should be up on cruelty to animals charges as well as firing a weapon in the presence of children in a park! You bet they are receiving nasty letters from outraged pet owners and parents! Can I post a link from my website about this?
I'm so sorry for your loss!

Please do post a link

Hi Mandie,

Yes, please do post a link. The more people that hear about this the more likely something will be done about the officer. There was no investigation instigated until this was leaked to the local press.

Both Chris and I are completely devasted. I wish with all my heart that my little guy was still here.

Thank you for your kind words and your help.

Rebecca

omg that is truly horrible. My heart goes out to you and your family. Please fight this to the very end and make justice be seen....what happened there is disgusting and that police officer needs to pay for his actions. Good luck with everything, I can only imagine how devastating this would be.

I can't believe that, it's horrible. Toby didn't look like a very threatening dog. And the officer's poor 3 and 4 year old daughters who had to watch their father murder a dog. I'll beat his daughter was scared because of the dog's size not his actions, the officer stupidly over-reacted. I hope you get some justice in this case.

OMG I am so sorry for your loss. That is horrible. I can't believe that someone would be so heartless.

I know nothing will bring back your precious Toby, but I hope that you find some justice in this. I will write/contact and do all I can to make my voice heard.

I got a reply from PETA and they were outraged as well. They gave various links to where you can get more help and possibly sue the department. I'm not sure if they sent you the same letter, but if not, let me know and I'll forward it to you. The press is a great way to put pressure on the police department, so keep at it!

Thank you everyone for your kind words and thoughts

I just want to say thank you to everyone for their kind words and thoughts. You wouldn't believe some of the horrible emails I've received, which have been very dispiriting. So it has been wonderful to talk with such a warm and caring group of people.

I will continue to post updates here as things move along. There was a relatively balanced article printed in a local paper, which you can view here, http://www.yourneighborhoodnews.com/...l#anchor289624

And yes, Mandie if you could forward the Peta email to me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you all.

Ohh My!! I for one feel that the people who have made it their choice to become police officers should be held to even higher standards than normal citizens. That is just shocking, and I sure hope that you win this battle for your slain guy! Sadly here in my little town we had an incident where a policeman shot and killed a dog that was tied up in it's own yard. The police were doing something at a nearby home, and an officer had walked onto the property where this dog was tied...the dog was a sweet loveable dog (but was a rot, and I think that was the dogs undoing) The officer said that the dog came out of his dog house...so he shot him. It was so sad....even if the dog had gone to the end of his tie he could not have reached where the officer was. I recall that the owner of the dog said that the police did not even apologize. Sheesh

I am so sorry for your loss. I read your website and my heart just goes out to the both of you. I sincerely hope that the man who did this is brought to justice. What a horrible thing to do, and he should be setting an example, especially for his own children. What he did was just wrong.
