A.1824/S.1895 would prohibit insurance companies in New York State from denying coverage to homeowners based solely on the breed of dog they own. Right now in New York, some insurance companies refuse to issue policies, cancel or decline to renew existing policies merely because a particular breed of dog, or a
mixed breed that bears some resemblance to certain delineated breeds, lives on the premises. This is true even when the particular dog in question is well-behaved, properly supervised and has never injured or threatened a person or another animal. This practice virtually guarantees euthanasia of otherwise adoptable dogs by shelters and humane societies and perhaps most importantly, forces homeowners to choose between a beloved family pet and insurance for their home- a choice no one should be compelled to make.
A.1824/S.1895 would put an end to this discriminatory practice in our state.
