Ugh,last paragraph "no" wasn't supposed to be in my statement,it was a typo,it should read:

"& Yes,you can tell if a snake is malnourished."

But people shouldn't get so upset just because it's a puppy. When someone feeds a live rabbit to their snake it's just as wrong but that doesn't make the news...

I'd actually probably feel more emotional about it if it was a rabbit. I love rabbits - I've seen pictures of frozen rabbits being fed to snakes and I almost cried. It's funny how so many people work to help rabbits in shelters, but then other people are feeding them to snakes. No, I'm not saying it's wrong - snakes need to eat too. I would never do it.

And I use to own reptiles myself, I don't think they all give them a bad name oveously. But we recently had a issue on myspace where a lot of people who have rabbit myspaces were getting videos sent to them of snakes eating live rabbits, and they were very very graphic - the rabbits were screaming and fighting and everything. They would actually look at pictures of people's pet rabbits and then send that person a video of a snake eating a rabbit that looked very similar to their pet. The videos were being sent by the reptile owners along with nasty messages for the sole purpose of making people upset.

Now I'm not saying every reptile owner does things like this or anything, but when people are doing things like this for the sole purpose of upsetting people, you can't help but to understand statements like "reptile owners give themself a bad name"

I also have snakes and yes most of my snakes eat live. I didn't want to feed live but this the only way they will eat. I only have one that I am able to feed frozen/thawed to. So not all owners have a choice as to feeding live vs frozen or pre-killed.

Not to sound ignorant, because I know some snakes are so picky that they won't even try certain colored animals...but did you try different methods with dead rodents?Again sometimes the methods don't work no matter what.
Actually I know of 3 people each with over 5 snakes, neither will accept dead& they tried absolutely everything!!

But still, the "reptile owners give theirself a bad name" you guys are throwing good owners into that catagory as well,& if you don't want to be prejudice to absolutely everyone in that "catagory" with an invalid statement,it's false, then I think that comment should be retracted.

I have a pet rabbit myself,if someone sent me a video of a snake eating a rabbit (I have a snake& a rabbit) for one I wouldn't watch it as soon as I figured out what it was then I'd message the person back with something like "too much spare time on your hands? maybe you need a job? a life...?"
They want attention, don't give it to them.Easy enough to do

Oh we didn't give them attention, I personally didn't watch the videos - I know what was in them because other people told me. I just ignored them, and still got about 6 or 7 messages in my inbox a day, everyday, for like a week. Annoying!

I know that not all reptile owners give them a bad name - if you want I'll change what I said to "SOME reptile owners give themselves a bad name" but it's still some of the reptile owners themselves, no the media or anyone else.

The kinds of people sending those videos might not have even been snake owners and if they were they certainly weren't very responsible. I don't think it's fair to group those kinds of people in with responsible owners. It's like grouping dog fighters with regular dog owners.

Also, no offense or anything, but it's MySpace. You should expect messages like that . That's why I don't use it...it's full of wackos, advertisements, and people with nothing better to do then ruin other people's days. You should come over to Livejournal .

There are video's on youtube and many other places showing the same thing. Rabbits, guinea pigs, etc struggling and screaming in pain. I don't show my animals eating their food, why do reptile owners have to show theirs? They do it just for the "shock" value. They want to get people worked up and pissed off. There is just no reason to make it public unless you are on the NGC, lol.

Yes, they do it for the shock value. But you know what? That's only some reptile owners. The same kinds of people who show their bettas fighting, their dogs attacking small animals, a cat being burned, etc. It isn't fair to judge a group based on those kinds of people.

I, for one, don't make videos showing my reptiles eating. Nor do I watch them. Actually, I find the constant pictures of snakes eating mice kind of boring and pointless. But that's just me.

I really think it is unfair to say ALL reptile owners are horrible people.I do not have a snake right now,but do have geckos and I do feed my female pinky mice SOMETIMES (not all the time, only when she lays eggs and loses alot of weight)...does this make me horrible?

And I agree...myspace is full of strange people,so just ignore people like that. They have no life obviously. And they want to piss people off and when it works, they feel like they accomplished something.

You guys are reading way to much into what I said.

Did I say that ALL reptile owners are horrible? I didn't even say anyone was horrible. Sasami wants to blame the media for reptile owners having a bad rap. It's really the reptile owners that give themselves a bad rap. The ones who feed puppies, show their dumbass videos, etc ruin the image of others. You guys are idiots.

I've rescued and worked with literally hundreds of snakes of all shapes and sizes, and only come across one that truly would not eat live. Every time I take a new private rescue the previous owner always gives me the long story of why it won't eat anything but live rodents, and every time - usually the first time offered - they take thawed for me. I've found that all too often, the owners just don't try hard enough. I've had snakes given to me that were ripped apart by live food, take thawed on the first time offered. Meaning, obviously, that their injury was completely unnecessary. People who feed live always have the "Yeah, but it won't happen to my snake." or "But I stand there and watch so I can stop it if something happens." attitude, but all it takes is one split second for your snake's eye to be ripped out, or a large gouge of skin that could potentially become badly infected or simply make an ugly scar. Personally, my pets are my children. This kind of risk is unacceptable. There is no need for an animal in captivity to have to fight to the death with another animal every time it needs to be fed.

That being said, and really, I'm not trying to be a complete jerk even though I often come across that way... but when you post a topic like "Puppy Eaten by Snake" it is nothing but an attention grabber, and does little to express any kind of feeling of "welfare" for either animal. It is little things like that which sensationalize the issue that is all it takes for people to fly off the handle. Not necessarily here. In my experience, as primarily a reptile person, PT people are pretty even keeled about all manners of reptile keeping, even the irresponsible keepers, but just using the article headline would probably have been a safer bet.

Thankfully this kind of incident is rare, but it does make the entire reptile keeping community look bad. You never see news articles about the millions of snake keepers out there who are responsible and caring about their pets.
