YORK, ENGLAND-May 27, 2004 — A British man who broke into an
animal shelter – armed with a samurai sword and an air rifle – to retrieve his dog has been sentenced to a little over a year in jail.
Prosecutors say shelter officials had seized the
Jack Russell terrier after overhearing the owner say he was going to kill the dog with a pickax.
The man's lawyer says her client was devastated after vets told him his dog was ill and needed to be put to death, and he could not afford the bill.
When the man broke into the shelter in York, England, in March he also had lighter fluid and a hammer. He surrendered to police after a 90-minute standoff.
The dog has since died.
