Tennessee Animal rights

I am from Chicago originally and donated 4 years of my life to rescuing animals and animal shelters. As bad as some people are, Chicago had strict animal abuse laws and enforced them.

When I finally moved to Cookeville, TN , for my husband. You know the place where the cop falsely pulled over a family and then shot their AB who approached wagging his tail, in the head. I was APALLED at how I saw people keep their pets. Most people here believe animals are for display.

The first incident was 2 years ago when I bought my Doberman. The man seemed like a smart, caring breeder who promised he had papers. He offered to do the ears himself, I assumed he meant thru his vet, but I said "No TY, I preferr my trusted vet." (Thank God i did this)! Well when I got to the property the man had 9 females roaming the property and one male! He came walking up with a hollering bloody puppy, and explained he ran out of numbing stuff and was doing her ears! I almost fainted from disgust at him. I was about to leave because there is NO WAY, I am supporting a back yard breeder who explains his *****es pop when they want to and he snatches up the pups to sell. His wife then walked out with my male, he tells me he needs to know if I am not taking the pup because his ears are next if not (meaning he had another buyer). Make matters worse the mother Dobes face is swollen to all **** from a cotton-mouth bite to the face, he tries to assure me it always happens and she will be ok.

I snatch up the male, and run back to my car. Crying all the way home. My dobe was covered and I mean covered in fleas, you could see them jumping all over. TO make matters worse his tail is raw and bleeding. For anyone who doesnt know about dobes you have to dock their tails at 1-2 days old or dont do it. This man docked their tails at 11 weeks old, you could see his bone. It caused him great pain and he had to keep a collar on from biting it. I Immediately rushed him to my vet. Ronin is a healthy boy now, a little small, and spoiled but he is my baby.

I called the police, the RSPCA (out of state cus there is none here), the Humane society and NO ONE did anyting or cared.

The second thing, was my neighbors dog. She was bought at a very small age and stuck outside on a huge chain with no water, no shelter, and a bag of food spread out on the ground once a week. I fed her every day and gave her fresh water. She dug a hole under there fence and would sit in my back yard all day crying for me. The collar she had was digging into her neck and bleeding at about 6 months, so I cut it off and put a new one on. I called the police about her conditions, animal control came out and bluntly told me the judge will not care even if she is lying there being stabbed by the owner. Again I run inside crying, my husband is telling me "This is how this state is, leave these people alone, they will likely poison our dog if we dont"! Well I try my best to turn a blind eye, at 8 months she had a litter of puppies and she was getting so thin she could barely stand. I went back to feeding her and now her new pups. I went to the owners and donated a bag of food and a dog house. Several puppies were killed by unkown events, the owners explained. My husband and my self moved 3 months ago so I do not know what has happened to her =(, I still cry for her.

There and MANY, MANY animals I drive by every day seeing the pain and abuse they are in. One was even about 4 months old, looked like a Pom, but was so skinny I couldnt tell. I was on a walk and saw the baby lying there on a chain gasping for air. I cant imagine she lived much longer.

I tried to get my Connections in NABRA to help me get the RSPCA or some form of animal rights to look into TN. I have written numerous letters to newpapers, animal rights groups and the RSPCA. All to no avail. This is ridiculous, and sickens me. If you dont have the will to stop yerself from attacking an animal abuser, do not move here.

If anyone knows how I can do something to make a difference her please let me know, so many animals here are suffering.

Well, don't think its just because its in the south. I'm only saying this because alot of people think that people in the south are ignorant about stuff like that. There are places all over the U.S. with no animal control officers and little help for the animals. I know how heart breaking it can be to see animals in distress. My town has 1 animal control officer and he is an ***. He has NO regard for the lives of animals. I've tried to get something done, but its dang hard. Good luck!!! If you find anything out about legalities let me know.

Glad I am no where near that state then or I would have certainly put a few people down.
Cant stand animal cruelty. I am thankfully living in a country that does not suffer from too much of that and in the UK I never saw anything of it either.
It must be so hard for you...

YOu know I was wondering the same thing. Many of the private rescues here has been shipping up "truckloads" of dogs from the South for adoption up here in Conn. It didn't bother me until I find out that our own Conn. Humane Society was doing the same thing. Apparently there is a huge problem of overpopulation is what I am told. Well when I have to hold beautiful dogs from OUR OWN area pounds while they are put to sleep ( I work at an animal hospital), this ticks me off to no end Many of them come up with terrible skin disorders.

Dobes are a fav. breed of mine and that story just sickens me.
