Lucky for us there is a great PetSmart near us. There are big cages for the rats and the GPs but the old Petsmart and a petco I used to go to were horrible. I only went to the PetSmart because there wasn't one that only sold food. I am glad you are still going after this because someone needs to speak for those who can't

our petco is pretty bad, too. the mice are just as bad. They don't know anything about sexing, last time I was there, I helped them pick out several males from the female tanks. There were dead mice in the male tanks, right in the food dishes. It was pretty gross. They don't really sell them as pets, but as snake food, and I guess that's how they try to justify the mistreatment. Its awful. The manager there is really nice, but he's a reptile man, he hates mice, so he doesn't seem to care.
The Petsmarts around here are so much cleaner, and friendlier. The animals are treated so much better. I used to be a pet food rep, and travelled around to different petsmarts, and I haven't seen a bad one. I'm interviewing for a job on thursday where I will be traveling to different petco stores, i'm not really looking forward to that aspect of the job.

people who open petstores need to look out for the wellbeing of all animals including feeder animals and bugs. If they have sick feeder animals would you really want your animals to eat the unhealthy feeder animal?

Mhm.That's the sad thing.
My snake only eats food from East Coast Canadian Feeders.
I wouldn't buy live...& I don't trust the dead mice& rats at the pet store either.
It could have been frozen/ thawed numerous times.

I keep bugs for my geckos, tarantula& sometimes my turtles.
The bugs live a happy life, roomy enclosures, fresh food, the whole lot.
Happy feeders = happy pets.
I don't like the idea of anything being kept inhumanely.

I have a nice little petshop nearby, they don't sell animals, only animal products...There's a PetsAtHome not too far away, but I hate large animal stores tbh, I've never found one that I've thought has treated all their animals well.

My main gripe with PetsAtHome at the moment is that they sell degus with inadequate information, they don't stock any good degu feed and the staff know very little about them. I also found a hamster in there with an abcess on its stomach which a staff member refused to investigate when I informed her.

As for this situation though, never underestimate the power of letter writing. Make sure you get in touch with your local /state SPCA (whether it's RSPCA, ASPCA, whatever). If you can, take pictures. Then you have photographic evidence of neglect.

Good on you for your work so far - any updates?
