wedding doves

GAH!!! my mom wants me to have doves released at my wedding.

I'm 100% against this, as a dove lover, I see it as cruel and desturbing, nothing short of taking cared for, beautiful pets...and dumping them off defenseless....the same thing people do to kittens!

my wedding theme is doves....
Instead of doing a unity candle.... may mom, and my BF's mom are going to have our two pet doves teathered to their arms...walk down the isle, and put them into a cage..... much more unique than using a unity candle.

Anyone know anything about White Homing Pigeons?
I've heard they can be used too.... with the same effect....
We live in an area with few diurnal preditors, so it may be worth looking into.

I'd attach a harness of some sort to their feet so you can release them but they can't fly away and get into trouble. It is cruel buying pet doves and releasing them at weddings, and if you have any doubt i'd think you being the bride...this being YOUR wedding, you could advise against it.

My Aunt actually owns white homing pigeos to release at wedding, but I have no idea about any of it. My Mom taks about her all of the time but she is like my 2nd or 3rd aunt so I only see her at big family gatherings.

I'm pretty sure there are places where you "rent" birds for that type of event and they go home (or wherever... back to thier owner) after they are released, not just on thier own in the wild. It might be worth reasearching, that would be pretty. Then again, if you aren't into it, it's your day!

Unless it is an unscrupulous operation they do in fact use "homing pigeons". Could you even imagine how much money they would lose if they had a business just releasing birds into the wild, having to get more birds and so on and so on. I think the whole controversy is what happened in 2000 when they released the doves in (I can't remember what country it was) while they shot off the fireworks and many of the birds were lost because they lost their bearings due to the noise and the flares. I'm sure they lost a couple from heartattacks from fear.
