Wis. Professor to Test Stun Guns on Pigs

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...ABTest=blurb_A

MADISON, Wis. - A professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison plans to study whether stun guns alone can kill pigs - or whether other medical factors must be at play - as part of an effort to understand why 70 people have died in North America since 2001 after being shocked by Tasers.

Led by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, outraged animal rights activists are calling for an end to the two-year study by John Webster, a professor emeritus of biomedical engineering.

Wow. I understand the reasoning behind it but surely there is some other, more humane way to test ...

id suggest that he try it on himself... why does it always have to be these people testing things on animals?

Well, if they are not tested on animals, then what will they test them on? I really don't like the idea of testing things on animals, since they depend on us for protection, but sometimes, sacrifices have to be made to make things safer for people. Stun guns are pretty scary if not properly used.

I'm having a thought...

Stun guns are meant to replace real guns, right? Or at least to try something before resorting to the use of real guns? Well, real guns kill more than stun guns, and I would hope that a cop wouldn't just shoot someone for the heck of it, so why can't we just leave it the way it is? I mean, probably 99.5% of people who are shot by cops are doing something to warrant it. These are criminals that animals are being killed for... not saying that criminals can't turn their lives around... it's just a thought...

I agree with Ilovesmepets, I feel they do need to be tested. Not all the people who are shot with stun guns are necessarily guilty of any crime. They certainly do not need to have their lives risked with a technology that seems to be fatal in some circumstances.

I like pigs, alot. They are smart, affectionate critters. However, I don't have a better alternative to animal testing in this instance. In some cases, computer modeling might help out. But with so many unknowns here, it' pretty unlikely that there is any real aternative to animal testing.

I would hope that some organization like HSUSA might agree to particpate to see that everything was at least done as humanely as possible.
