I was wondering if anyone else has problems with their degus urinating outside of their cage? Since we upgraded the cage from the single rat cage to the double rat cage they have been urinating from the upper levels onto the walls and carpets. They have also been urinating on their running saucer and running on it which causes it to spray everywhere.
Is there also a collalation between degu urine and hives? My husband seems to get hives a lot more since we got the new cage.
ok so my walls are covered in stuff too
i just noticed this as mine got a new cage 3 weeks ago
its gross
i think they must shoot it across the room lol
Wow! Yeah I can't help there! Mine does the same thing! But if you find the answer, than by all means put it up!
Sorry I'm not much help there! Looks like its a common problem!
I have that problem too. I have found a significant reduction though since we re did the cages with wooden shelves, because they don't go right upto the corners they can't get in to them to wee outside of the cage
my degu cage has a wood wall for the back. only the sides and front are open cage. from what i can tell. they've always peed towards the wood wall. now, it's not pretty to the eyes, i wipe it. but fact is, my girls choose to pee against the wall, instead of anywhere else. maybe try putting a board up in their cage as a wall, see if it helps.
i haven't noticed a bad smell in the walls
last time i cleaned it i used clorox cleanup
this stuff will bleach the color out if it is not a white wall
