In my opinion,a "pet" is a domesticated animal bred for companionship.Cats,dogs and other companion animals are "pets".Animals that show love and affection for their humans and that want to be with their people,those are "pets" IMO.


Things like reptiles,inverts and fish are not "pets" perse,not in the same way as a cat or dog.Most reptiles,inverts and fish do not care to be handled and they are not cuddly and do not show love and affection towards humans.


The same goes for wild animals...big cats,wild dogs,birds of prey...things like these are also not "pets",they are wild animals.
