Diet Tips for Cats?

Hello:

I got Hobbes in early February - he's 4-years old and my first pet on my own (that is, all other pets have been family pets). He was close to 13lbs when I got him and now he's closer to 14lb. I want to get his weight down because I don't want him to have health problems later. I was hoping someone could offer some advice.

I give him a handful of dry food in the AM - usually a mixture of Nutro urinary health and Nature's Recipe. When I get home from work I give him some canned food - usually Nutro, Wegmans, or Fancy Feast. I give him either a full small can or about half of a large can. I give him treats when I groom him and such but I've cut back on the treats I was giving him before because I was worried about his weight. I'll admit that I let him have some people food on occasion too.

Am I feeding him too much or too little? How often should I give him treats? What can I do to help the little guy lose weight? Obviously I feel bad about this because it's my fault - he can't feed himself so it's my responsibility to make sure he's eating the right amount of food.
