introducing a cat to a dog.

i have a cat, he's about 8 years old. i got him when i was 18, living with mom and dad. about a year and a half ago i moved in with my girl friend and bought my cat with me. my g/f already has 2 cats and a dog. all the same age. they all get along with each other except my cat. it's been a year and a half and he's becoming more tolerant of the other two cats. he'll let them get a foot or so away before he gets angry. sometimes i think he tries to play with them but he still doesn't know how to play with them because he had never been around other cats before.
as for the dog, he wants no part of the dog. he can be in the same room but if the dog so much as looks at him he gets angry. the dog could care less.
is there any hope the my cat will ever accept or tolerate the dog or is it a lost cause?

it could go either way lol, I know thats not much help, but its true. some cats will eventually warm up to the situation while others just tend to tolerate it and never participate. I had a cat like that for 18 years, amazing cat, loved us so much, but he hated all the other animals, wanted no part of them for any reason, they all learned to ignore each other and thats just how it worked for them...alls I can say is be patient and keep on doing what your doing
