I'm so terribly sorry to hear what has happened to Coco, when all you were doing was the right thing for him.
If you haven't yet you should put up flyers everywhere. Put them up where he ran away, and near home and everywhere in between. Call all vets and all shelters to ask if he has been brought in, and ask to be called if a cat that meets his description is brought in. However don't wait to be called, call them every day or two anyway.
Call your local radio station many do courtesy advertisements for lost pets.
Post on your local craigslist lost pet section.
Post in your local newspaper's lost pet section. Those ads are often free.
Put something that smells like him and that smells like you in your yard so it will be easier for him to find his home.
Keep looking for him in the area he ran away, and every place i in between that area and your home.
It sounds like he is used to being outside? So there is a lot of hope he will find his way home.
I have a friend whose cat was found two months after he disappeared, and it was right after she moved. Don't give up hope.
I'm praying for your Coco.
